Extraordinary news that could have a huge impact on the North Mississippi economy -- a positive impact.!

A Japanese newspaper reported that Toyota Motor Corp. has picked Mississippi for its next U.S. manufacturing plant.

The Nikkei, a leading Japanese business newspaper, reported the plant would cost $829 million and produce Toyota SUV.

The plant would employ up to 2,000 and could easily bring that many supplier-related jobs.

Toyota says the plant would be complete in 2009 and have an annual capacity of 150,000vehicles.

The 1700 acre Wellspring Site at the corner of Pontotoc, Lee and Union counties that local officials have been promoting as a site for an auto manufacturer.

All of this information is based on reports from a japanese newspaper right now.

But to add some credibility to the likelihood that Tupelo has been chosen, the governor's office says Haley Barbour will be in Tupelo Tuesday at 9:00 a-m at Tupelo High School to make a major announcement regarding economic development.

Gee, I remember when US companies made cars in America and because of strong unions and well paid workers they were the finest in the world. Foreign companies jobs were not really needed. But because of off shoring our jobs for greater profits and complete mismanagement foreign companies are now Herald as saviors! Shows you the sorry state of the US economy and the destruction of our manufacturing base, and America.

We were sold out by both corporate democrats and republicans starting with Reagan.
Unions have been both good and bad. You seem to think it's the company's fault, but when you have strong unions you have higher prices on automobiles due to the union's demands. It's harder to adjust your demand when you can't let go of anyone and the labor is artificially high due to wage standards. Toyota and others have figured out that they can have more flexibility in their employment practices by hiring non-union workers. They grow and more people get hired when necessary and their wages also rise. These are the opposite results of the unions.
