Question for leo or lawguy. Why do the police always ask "Where are you going" when you are stopped for a traffic violation? You guessed it, I was stopped yesterday for like the first time in 15 years or so. I answered respectfully (yes Ma'am no Ma'am) and I hope humbly. I mean no disrespect and I defer to law enforcement good judgement.

Most of the time LEOs ask questions to determine if you are hiding something or under the influence of something. If he/she had been suspicious of you, h/she would have probably asked more questions and even repeated that question again. If you're nervous the officer has many ways of knowing, just doesn't always know why, so getting you to talk with simple questions is one way of checking you out.
Or maybe, he/she was just nosy? Smiler

Sometimes it's just a way "break the ice."
My first remarks to the patrolman whom I saw turn around to come back "for me" on the Natchez Trace a few years ago was a smile and "I was waiting for you!" I had already pulled over and stopped! He did not ticket me but reminded me of the speed limit on the Trace - which of course, I knew! He also pointed out that I could get killed. It would have been a one car accident! I thanked him for caring and we parted friends.
9 o'clock at night, not another car in sight...no lights anywhere...just cruising along... and out of some back road comes the North Courtland police....no warning here, gives me a $121.00 ticket and says "have a nice evening"..speed limit was 45, I was doing 60. So, guilty as charged....but there were no speed limits posted on the highway. But now I know that 45 is the speed limit on all county roads. So beware.
