"The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers, Cult Favorites and Neglected Gems" – a free film series sponsored by the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library and Pillar of Fire – is launching a special salute to the 90th birthday of an American literary legend.

The movie miniseries “Bradbury 90: Journey to Far Metaphor” honors the career of beloved science-fiction and fantasy author Ray Bradbury, who turns 90 on Aug. 22 of this year.

“Bradbury 90” opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 22, with French director Francois Truffaut’s first English-language feature, "Fahrenheit 451" (1966). Based on Bradbury’s best-known novel, the film stars Oskar Werner as Guy Montag, a fireman in a dystopian future society where reading is outlawed and the primary function of “firemen” is to burn contraband books.

"Fahrenheit 451" features a memorable musical score by screen composer Bernard Herrmann, whose classic credits range from Orson Welles’ "Citizen Kane" to Alfred Hitch****’s "Psycho" to Martin Scorsese’s "Taxi Driver." The international cast includes Julie Christie, Cyril Cusack and Anton Diffring.

Thursday’s "Fahrenheit 451" screening will be preceded by the rare showing of a 1963 short documentary for television, “Ray Bradbury: The Story of a Writer,” directed by Terry Sanders and produced by David L. Wolper.

A complete listing of all “Bradbury 90” films and other programming – which continues through early March 2011 – will be announced at the "Fahrenheit 451" screening.

"The Screening Room" is organized and hosted by film historian and Pillar of Fire founder Terry Pace, who teaches English at UNA.

All "Screening Room" programs are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. For details, call the library at (256) 764-6564 or Pillar of Fire at (256) 366-4512, or e-mail Pillar of Fire at pillaroffire@bellsouth.net.
