Bluesman you are not missing anythang. What the #1 problem in this area is the "Bible Belt" folks THINK it is such a sin to do anything. Don't lie, don't drink, don't steal and oh yes don't smoke. Oh? And would YOU conclude that it is OK to lie or to steal? Smoking is obviously for dummies, since it can KILL YOU in several different ways, but if you want to die prematurely, go ahead and be a fool and smoke. As to gambling, there are practical considerations. Two things to remember:

1. In the end the HOUSE WINS!

2. YOU are NOT the HOUSE!

Outside of stealing these should not be matters of law. Pornography is looked at as disgusting part of society but you can pay for that right in you're own home. Watch an orgy on TV but don't put your dollar in that slot machine! Sounds stupid to me.
