What's the latest on the firing agenda in Tuscumbia? Anybody know who's next on the mayor's hit list?
City employees haven't been rehired so some of you better lay low for awhile or at least until you get approval. Question: Can a city department head who is 24/7 legally hold another secular fulltime job? Maybe an attorney general's ruling is needed to answer this one????? Maybe the coucil will try to do better this time than the last term since they ought to know more by now. Sooner or later some, perhaps, disgruntled employee may just step up to the plate and demand honesty in dealing with under-the-table issues like a fire chief who works three jobs -- all three full time, with only one of them being with the city.
His claim to city time is that he sleeps at the firehouse to get in his forty winks - oooops - hours, that is. His office time goes to car dealership, and his off time goes to his construction company building mega-buck houses. Check it out ............ Wink

I believe under PERSONNEL POLICIES AND PROCEDURE it states that employees must not obtain outside employment which will in any way bring about a conflict of interest with their city job or appearance thereof, nor shall outside employment be performed on city time or with city resources. Failure to abide with these conditions can bring about dismissal.
Most firemen in this area, not only in Tuscumbia, MUST work multiple jobs to feed and house their families. Have you looked at exactly how much they get paid to risk their lives for you each day?

Their "24 hour on" schedules require that they sleep at the station. Or would you prefer they stayed awake for 23 hours and came to rescue you, sleep deprived, in the 24th?
Sounds to me like the city of Tuscumbia needs a complete overhaul. This would probably be a good thing.

Reminds me of a quote from the movie Roadhouse "It's gonna get worse, before it gets better". lol.

But seriously, I have a huge problem with people taking advantage of the system. I know it happens all the time, but it needs to be exposed!

If it means making people mad and stepping on certain people toes that are not used to having them stepped on, then so be it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they are not doing their job, or they are being dishonest about time sheets or what ever the situation is, I say fire their butts and get people in there who are willing to make an honest days pay!

I get so tired of people not wanting to take responsibility for their actions!

Amen, know&tell, every dog has his day! People are scared to say anything, they don't want to cause waves.

Just like I posted before in another post on here. When C.B. was a "Major" at TPD, she was teaching at the college, working at the PD part time and drawing a full time paycheck. No telling how dollars was taken from the city during that time. Or when she was driving a city owned Police Vehicle to school in Miss using city gas.

This crap will keep happening if somebody doesn't step up to the plate and do something.
If the "extra" jobs do not interfere with the city work then there should be no problem. If you use the firehouse just to sleep, then that is a problem. Just like when I go to work, I plan on being there for the full shift. Why do the firemen have to drive to the rocking chair with three trucks and eat. This waste city gas and puts miles on the trucks. They know they are to be at work and should go prepared.
As for the CB issue and her driving a city vehicle to miss for school, was it something the city wanted her to do?
As for the fire chief, I have seen the new fire chief truck outside the city limits at a new house job site. This truck does stay parked most of the time at the chiefs house. Does he ever drive it to the station or is it that he is not there much?

FHANTOM AND KNOWANDTELL, I agree with both of you on many points. This mess has been going on waaaay too long. WB did it when he was chief at TPD. When he was supposed to be at his office, he was messing with race cars or CB. She was allowed, by him, to do anything she wanted while she was on Tuscumbia City time. The Burns family has to realize that their reign is over. If an employee is scheduled to work from 8 am until 5 pm or, whatever their hours are, then they should do that one job and that one job only. If you are taking care of business that pertains to an outside job, then you are stealing money from your employer, herefore that employee should be dismissed. I do realize that some of the city employees have a hard time making a living for their family on the salary they are getting. Also, I can't blame any one of them for getting a second job, but this second job should not interfere with their city job in any way. I don't want my tax dollars paid to someone that is selling cars or building houses on city time. What they do on their "OFF TIME" is totally their business. I can only hope that this business with CB is the beginning of a good house cleaning in Tuscumbia. Thank goodness a good portion of that riff-raff is gone already. I don't give a rip whose toes are stepped on! If you aren't doing anything you shouldn't be doing then your toes are safe.

AMEN! About using gas in the trucks just so they can get something to eat. The cost to move those trucks is probably great. Why can't at least one person go in their private vehicle and bring back food for the rest of the crew.

I'm sure when they eat at the station they take the truck and stop at a store.
They drive the truck to the grocery store because I have seen them.

Another thing that kind of chaps me is that there is another department head that drives his city car on the weekend, EVERYWHERE! I haven't seen his name mentioned on here, yet. Not calling any name but the last name starts with a T and the car is parked at the utility department, sometimes. Why would one use this city car to drive to Florence, with his wife aboard, to an eating establishment? I saw this one for myself! I can understand the employees driving their city vehicles home, BUT ONLY if they are on call and they are going to actually be doing some work when they are called out. Otherwise those city vehicles should stay parked and only be used when the employee is on city time. Whay are they entitled to use the city's gas for personal errands or just personal thing period? Everybody else has to drive their personal vehicles to work! They should have to do the same. Park those city vehicles for 6 months and see how much gas money is saved. Bet it would be a shocker to see this!

First of all the Chief's Job is different that a fireman. and yes firemen has to have a second job, but I believe that the Chief's is listed a certain way in the policy, and that his job is listed as a 40 hour week, and no he can not just change it if it is written into policy without going though the council, that is if anyone can find a policy. and any city employee that is not on call, is in violation of the ethics law. and will catch up with them all one day. and i cant wait. but those that are call certainly deserve the right to drive their car anyware, due to the simple fact that if they are out eating with their family, and get called out, then they have to take off and go. I dont know why in the world the chief would need a 50,000 truck like that, but then on the forums one day someone explained it to me, it was so he could drive though the streets of Tuscumbia. lol.... and the firemen make alot more money than the police, the only difference is that the firemen get the chance to work a second job!!! I think the police dept. should go to working 24 hour shifts, with sleep time and all that. that would even things up. I know that one day someone will show up with documented evidence of this wrong doing, and it will be displayed on 48, 19, and 31 way before anyone can do anything about it. and they will be scrambling up at city hall, like they had no idea that any of this was going on. and one thing that really bothers me is that Tuscumbia is still one of the lowest paid departments in the state. and before you compare them to sheffield or anyone else, most of those cities pays for the employees insurance and family coverage too. SO WHAT HAS CHANGED IN TUSCUMBIA! NOTHING, NOTHING, I CANT WAIT TIL THEY HAVE A HOUSE CLEANING IN TUSCUMBIA, HOPE THEY GET THEM ALL THAT IS DOING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There should be an employee policy and procedure book in each department and each individual should have their own. We have to remember that this is Tuscumbia we are talking about here so one may not exist. When my husband was still working they had to keep one in the trunk of their car at all times. If there isn't one for all departments in Tuscumbia then someone should make that a top priority. I know that it is too much to ask that they ALL read the Tuscumbia ordinances and codes.

Longarm, I DO AGREE with you, there needs to be a very intensive house cleaning done in all of the city departments. Take some names and kick some behinds. Park those city vehicles that are being used for personal things and drive your own cars like every other employee has to do. To me this would just be common sense. Just maybe we could find enough to give our police department a raise they so badly need, every little bit helps. I do understand about those that are having to drive their city vehicles home because of being on call, but the ones that aren't on call, and those that aren't going to do one lick of work once they get there, need to park those cars and use their own dang gas. Maybe car pooling wouldn't be a bad thing, sell some of those cars. There are a lot of ways to help our police department if we will just apply ourselves a little bit. See, that's why we need another woman (the right woman of course) back in charge. We can cut corners like you wouldn't believe when we have to. Wink Ask any woman that has to run a household on a budget. Mad Wow, I really got on my soap box there for a minute, didn't I? But all of this stuff just chaps me good, a huge portion of the spending on cars, gas, and the upkeep of these cars can be eliminated.
