As you might already know the rightwing republicans are not for the unions. In 1980 President Reagan took the union power away. I'm not sure about the power the union may have in a work place, but I'm sure its not as strong as it once was. you need to do a google on the histroy of the unions it tells alot.
Amidst the continued outpouring of praise for Ronald Reagan, let's not forget that he was one of the most anti-labor presidents in U.S. history, a role model for the virulently anti-labor George W. Bush.
Republican presidents never have had much regard for unions, which almost invariably have opposed their election. But until Reagan, no GOP president had dared to challenge labor's firm legal standing, gained through Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the mid-1930s.
Reagan's Republican predecessors treated union leaders much as they treated Democratic members of Congress -- as people to be fought with at times, but also as people to be bargained with at other times. But Reagan engaged in precious little bargaining. He waged almost continuous war against organized labor.
He had little apparent reason to fear labor politically, with opinion polls at the time showing that unions were opposed by nearly half of all Americans and that nearly half of those who belonged to the unions had voted for him in 1980 and again in 1984.
Reagan,in any case, was a true ideologue of the anti-labor political right. Yes, he had been president of the Screen Actors Guild, but he was notoriously pro-management, leading the way to a strike-ending agreement in 1959 that greatly weakened the union and finally resigning under membership pressure before his term ended.

I take it from the posters screenname that they are young. I don't know why and I know I am being unPC about this, but just think this kid ain't been around or he, she or it (and when the hell did we have to start using that kind of disclaimer?) ain't been out in the world very much. I am no longer in a union. As a matter of fact, I don't even work for a company that is interested or will allow union talks. I DID work for South Central Bell, prior to AT&T break up and now the blessed remarraige, for 20 years in Birmingham (greatest city in Alabam, props to Randy Newman). Came back to Florence due mainly to divorce and my father dying and went to work for this abovementioned company who has seminars on how to crush union organizers. I sit through the meeting with a muzzle, I always come out of them feeling like I need a shower. I'm a UNION man, plain and simple. I KNOW the big corporations like the ones I work for don't want, can't stand, and are ONLY in this area because of the loss of Union strenght. It makes me sick to see the way they treat the hourly workers, but if I want to keep a job (and that ain't easy in FLorence Thanks to Forrest Wrong and his 10 year failure plan with SEDA, at least he gets HIS check!) I have to go along. Sometimes I come out of some of those meetings feeling like a 10 dollar ***** on 1st Ave N in B'ham. but what else can I do with 2 kids in college and a whole new set of mortgage payments? YEAH, ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE UNION LABEL, just about says how I feel. THE DOG

Unions also insure that you keep drug user's on the job site. Companies are reluctant to fire drug users because of the union. The union will sue them if they fire a drug user. Unions protect lazy employees also.
Unions are no longer a good thing. They drive up the price of products as well as protect lazy drug heads.

Yes, without a doubt, Union dues are worth every cent. I have only been a member for four years. How I wish I had become a member sooner.
If you want better wages and benifits, get off your butts and get your training/apprenticeship done, and get in a union.

Sure you and some others maybe the exception. Bama Sunshine is correct in what she said though. I know personally some alcoholics and drug users that brag about getting messed up on the job site. They are union workers, electricians, pipe fitters, and boiler makers.
That is a fact not a generalization. I also know that they have been to arbitration hearings about there drug use. The union help them to keep there jobs after they got caught stealing and getting intoxicated on the job.

I made a **** good living as a UNION WORKER, and still to this day support our Union's Brothers, and Sisters who are fighting a battle to save the middle class today, not only for them selves, but for those of you who dislike, and hate the Unions.
THe middle class was began by the Unions who only asked for a living wage, to live a more tolerable life, to also recieve benefits such as health care, and to eliminate on the job hazards just to name a few. And remember this, these BENEFIT's were not given to the workers ( as most companies like you to think )they were negotiated, and fought over for you by going on strike's,Plant takeover's and more. (READ about WALTER REUTHER" ( of course you Union hater's will say he was a Communist) but for more insight in to this matter, Read how Henry Ford fought to keep the Unions OUT by hiring GOON'S to use scare tactics to eliminiate the threat of anyone getting any of Fords outlandish Profits at that time.
After the Union won the right to be recognized as the bargining tool for the workers did Mr. Ford then realize that paying a $5.00 a day wage ( at that time ) did in fact make for a better invironment for every one, and in doing so increased profit's for Himself and his company. Also the workers at Ford actually then were able to purchase the fruits of their labor A NEW FORD AUTOMOBLILE.
Buy American Made product's (if you can find them) and put the American Worker back where he belongs. For the American Worker is the BEST in the WORLD bar none. Demand that YOUR government LEADER'S eliminate these "NAFTA","CAFTA" and every other **** thing that is made up to put the American worker out of work. Do it NOW!! before we're sold out to the highest bidder (if we already aren't)

I think that after reading your post your screen name should be FLOOZIE. You really write like you have an College education. (LOL) You must me a loser. A loser that gave up and left and won't come back to North Alabama until someone else(a union) makes it a better situation for you to come home. You picked a bad mate( probably married after a one night stand) and you think you are some body special.
I'm a business owner and my father was a union member most all of his adult life. He has the same opinion about the unions as I do. I guess that is enough said. Go spend your money on goods made in another country! LOSER

Kindred; technically I am still in the CWA since my 401 and pension is still there. As I stated, when I moved back here, there wasn't a position for me like the one I had with South Central Bell so I took an "early" retirement but that wasn't enough to pay the bills, so I went to work at a non-union organization. I'm with you all the way! And I DON'T shop at Wal-Mart, I think we have already discussed that earlier. Just keep the job you got and be thankful that "you don't scare me, I'm in the Union!' THE DOG

As far as attacking me saying I am a floozie and that I married after a one night stand? ..wow the hostility....your the obvious loser..not worth even addressing it...if your dad was a union member and he has the same opinions as you (maybe he was one of the drug addicts you spoke of) sounds to me like he got into trouble & the Union he was in couldn't help him-maybe he was a SCAB- Unions help people who need it-I go out of my way to buy American and I am proud to represent 160 employees in my Union-CWA-and yes all those employees that I have helped over the years??? they think I'm special!!!
