The practice of knowingly allowing guns to "walk" -- or be sold to straw buyers and then transferred to criminal organizations -- is against ATF policy. However, at least 15 ATF whistleblowers claim the agency, with the approval of Holder's Department of Justice, encouraged gun stores to make sales to questionable buyers, then failed to interdict the weapons.
According to Mexican authorities, at least 1,800 of those weapons were successfully smuggled into Mexico, where the cartels used them to commit crimes and foment violence.
What especially galls and upsets U.S. gun owners is this: While the ATF was allegedly sending guns south, hoping to eventually bust the entire trafficking organization, Obama administration officials, including President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were partly blaming U.S. gun stores for the violence in Mexico.
Jimbo is partially right about gun shops knowing that some of their wares were going south of the border because the administration wants it that way. Remember the quote "You never let a serious crisis go to waste." by Rahm Emanuel? The chaos in Mexico aided with commercial guns from legitimate US dealers who reported the gunrunners could be used to get more restrictive gun laws passed. The lap dog press with the leg tingles would be happy to comply with pro-administration reporting minus the rest of the story.

So far, BATF refuses to answer the congressional subpoena. Next, a court ordered one. The BATFinks got a couple of Americans killed.

A Congressional investigation is currently under way. Eric Holder is denying knowledge of the BATFE operation. That says a lot Yeah...right. . As for 'legitimate' dealers 'knowing' that some gun sales are intended for 'south of the border' dilivery: PROVE IT.
The gun dealers went to the BATF and warned of the gun sales, but were rebuffed by BATF.
