That's because it is illegal. When you group something harmless like pot with the hard drugs and make no distinction between them, it becomes a gateway.

Most people who are into heavy drugs also smoke cigarettes, usually people start smoking those before they try pot. So why aren't cigarettes considered a gateway drug?

The reason pot is illegal has absolutely nothing to do with it's effects. There is not one single case of anyone dying from an overdose of pot, none. It's far less damaging on the human body than alcohol. It also has proven medical benefits and we've just scratched the surface of what it can do.

The reason it's illegal is pure politics. Some racist preacher who was well connected in Washington led a campaign to ban it because he was afraid the evil Jamaicans and Mexicans would seduce white women with it. The marijuana tax act was passed, but was ruled unconstitutional. Instead of correcting the mistake, it was grouped with the harshest drugs in existence and banned by the federal government.

Hundreds of thousands of people are arrested for pot every year. It costs an enormous amount of tax payer money to keep marijuana illegal not to mention the lives it's ruined by locking people up for it.

What Phelps did was no worse than having a beer or lighting up a cigarette. It's a sign that we are still a long way off from solving this problem when people over react to someone smoking a little pot.

Nash, great post and great information. i thought i was the ONLY person in the Shoals area aware of the TRUE story behind the "green devil"! this ranks up there with " welcome to Alabama. cut you grass or we'll whip your ass! "

The funny thing about this story is that is says more about pot than it does Phelps. Everyone wants to talk about what Phelps did wrong. No one is mentioning that if you can smoke pot, and still be an elite athelete, maybe we overestimate the effects of pot.

THAT IS THE POINT I WANTED TO SEE!!!! Big Grin

Let's see: Bill Clinton smoked pot but didn't inhale, Barack Obama admitted to trying drugs. Professional atheletes and other celebrities routinely and publicly check into various rehabs. What's the big deal about Phelps smoking weed when he is not in training or competing? Why crucify him?

"Why don't we all get drunk and screw?" LOL

I'm no LEO, but I did stay at a Holiday in last night.
Nash has the right thoughts, Pot is only illegal for political reasons. It has been illegal for so long now that no one can figure out how to properly tax it, and sometimes it is just easier to keep things the way they are. That is way too bad for all the American citizens who have been convicted of marijuana laws and are having to pay the price of possessing it.

The law is way antiquated and needs reformed.
As one who has arrested individuals for pot poss, I have changed my mind as it should not be on the narcotic list...it is safer than alcohol or tobacco.
Tobacco alone has done more harm than pot ever thou about doing...Pot is a good example of where emotion overrules logic and should be legal, as law enforcement needs to concentrate on other things...

And so is nicotine and alcohol idiot but the government found a way to make money off those so it's just fine. Phelps is less a harm to himself or others after smoking a little weed than he would be blind drunk. It really is just a little weed. I think more of him.
