Like I said, that is just one way to stop the abuse of tasers without getting rid of them. Personally though I'd rather see them gone all together.
Tasers like any tool on a police officers belt can be beneficial for the apprehension of a person. Hopefully that apprehension will be conducted safely and swiftly without harm to any persons involved. And also, as CHT and WH point out so fervently, officers sometimes can and do misuse their authority.
But, I personally know of an incident where a FPD officer responded to a domestic fight in progress involving a husband and wife in a fight. The wife had obtained a baseball bat and was swinging it at her husband's head. Clearly, I think we all would agree that a baseball bat to the head can be considered deadly force. Officers are allowed to meet and exceed by one degree on the use of force continuum. So any responding officer or officers would be justified in using deadly force on this female for swinging it at her husband's head. The first officer on scene observed this female swinging at her husband's head and chose to deploy his Taser instead of shooting and possibly killing the woman.
Moral of the story: Although tasers can possibly injure of cause a death of an individual and also can possibly be misused by some A-hole cop, the VAST majority of the time they are used properly and are proven to SAVE lives.
