Where is this place? This area is treated like a retirement community. Concerts isn’t allowed, nothing fun is allowed so what is a two million dollar tourism and visitor center needed for?

Many in the crowd were seeing the $2 million facility for the first time today. “This is about pride in design and the fact that this is a facility the whole area can be proud of,” Whitten said. “It stands as a representation of where we have come from, where we are and where we’re going.”

Where did they come from and where are they going when they spend two million on a visitor center?

I have been to the new facility since it was finished a couple of times and even though I was a harsh critic in the beginning I will say, it turned out better than I expected. There are a multitude of sins against symmetry that I could point out but I will tolerate the thing since it’s too late to remedy them. The inside gadgetry is wonderfully done in themes of the area with live interaction by the visitor. I’ll give it an A+.

Any architectural objections of design I will keep to myself unless asked by anyone that would have a clue.

.it is two feet above the flood zone............that is the reason TVA made them tear the other building down, bring in dirt fill to the required level and re-build. ................and no the road rarely floods to a point where the building would be inaccessible. In a case where it did one would assume visitors from other than Alabama would not drive into the water.

The building is three feet higher than the old clubhouse was.  It is well above flood level.

The building features some original and very skillfully constructed natural wood features produced by Robin Wade.  These include the walnut doors, the several interior benches constructed from big irregularly-shaped slabs of hardwood, and a fantastic conference room table made from a huge section of a tree that reportedly was downed in the outbreak of tornadoes that devastated areas south of Florence, including Hackleburg, a couple of years ago. You might have to ask to see the table, since it is away from the main visitor area, but the staff will show it to you if you request to see it.

The floor features an expressionist version of the Tennessee River, made with tile from Centiva.  it is exquisitely crafted.

All in all, the building is a very high quality structure that provides a great image for the Shoals. Moreover, it was brought in under budget, a rare thing these days.

Concerts aren't allowed WHERE?  There are concerts in the Shoals often.  If you are lamenting that there is no enormous venue for concerts to attract multiplied thousands, then I say, "So what?"  Such venues more often than not attract the unwashed bubbatocious masses to listen to "music" that scarcely deserves the name.  Moreover, such facilities often become a financial liability to the community that gets conned into building them.  We can well do without such.

I'm not talking about the small town, local boy "concerts". Ever been to any of the concerts in Huntsville & Nashville? If you haven't, give it a try. You will then see what a real concert is.

Charlie Daniels & his band, along with Shooter Jennings & a couple more bands put on concerts here at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame a few years ago. I didn't see any "unwashed bubbatocious masses". The concert went very well, with none of the problems you might expect out of such a huge crowd.

Duh! Do ye think? And that little piece of info is supposed to be the reason the Shoals can't have someone besides the local good ole boy concerts?

Semi, this was your original quote: Where is this place? This area is treated like a retirement community. Concerts isn’t allowed, nothing fun is allowed so what is a two million dollar tourism and visitor center needed for?

Concerts isn't (sic) allowed? As Contendah and I have asked, just what concerts aren't allowed? There's a big difference between not allowing something and not being able to arrange something financially feasible.

Florence doesn't have a Level I trauma unit either. Apparently the town's size doesn't justify it. No one is banning it...or any concerts.

You again used the word "allowed.": Can you prove something hasn't been "allowed" here?

BTW, I see you've gone from simply dissing Florence to including the entire Shoals...

Fire, I will not acknowledge any of your post again. Trying to reason with you logically & in an adult manner isn't possible. I took you off block thinking maybe whatever your problem was with me had been dealt with, but evidently not. Back to block you go.

Comes now the lunatic semicoma, claiming the ability to reason logically; clearly the psychopath loose with her cannon.

I've always heard love closely resembled hate. Make up your mind, you're showing your psychopathy.

Excellent comeback!

Metro Nashville has well over half a million people.  Florence has about 40,000.  How did you come up with that "slightly bigger" business?   Even if you count all four cities in the Quad-cities area, the population is only about one fifth that of Nashville.

I would be interested in your take on the architecture.   As to "symmetry", I can not imagine what your objections might be.  Symmetry more often than not produces dullness in architecture..

________

Just because this area is not as large as the others, I don't know why we can't have concerts with decent/popular bands. The redneck shows put on here that is labeled concert is not what I call a concert. When Charlie Daniel was here, that was a concert!

You are not alone in that opinion.  In the June 9 Times Daily "You Said It" section, someone with either a sense of humor or a well-developed sense of irony posted this:

<<<In Tuesday's paper, you ran photographs on Page 1 of the new Florence tourism center.  And the caption said, "the tiles on the floor represent the Tennessee River that runs through the building."  Now I wonder:  I just sloppy editing or a tongue-in-cheek prophecy?>>>

The comment is not included in the TD's archive of "You Said It" comments. Did the tourism people complain and have it removed?
