While eating at Rick's BBQ today, in the booth behind us was some employees of the company that will be building the new WalMart on Cloverdale Road.   I ask them about the size of the store and how it would compare with the existing Florence location.  They weren't very specific but did say that the store would be larger than the existing Florence location.

Estimate for opening is somewhere around February 2014 as of this time.  No additional information either about what other businesses might locate on the lots/parcels that accompany the store and that will be along Cloverdale Road.

Just thought I would pass it along just in case anyone was interested.

According to previous reports, however, the new store will not have a tire and lube department like the current store has.  That doesn't bother me, but I wonder what parts of the larger new store will be larger than similar areas of the current store.

Wal Mart is gonna build a new store and create jobs.  Go to the florence store and look at the brand new self scanner machines.(no people working the cash register)  They are eliminating jobs as quick as they can.  I want to encourage every body to boycott these machines.  If you have to stand in line a few minutes, do it.

When our original WalMart was built, it was the biggest store they built.  In the new store, it will be much more visually stimulating, and the food store will be much nicer looking.

They've been putting restaurants in most new WalMarts--often Subway stores.  Look for some kind of food place to be inside the front door.

But the merchandise will be the same, and the faces will remain the same.

Hopefully they'll put a WalMart fuel store in the parking lot, however.  Pay for gas with a WalMart card, and you get a big discount.  Except the last couple of weeks, WalMart gas is usually the cheapest gasoline in a city.

Haven't had a chance to visit Publix yet, but when I do get a chance, I'm sure it will still be there.

Walmart has done a great job providing what consumers want and making a one stop shopping experience.  Actually they were not the first (I believe) for up North you had stores like Mejer which really had one stop shopping with everything and the kitchen sink in the store.

As for Publix three things sets Publix, apart for me at least.  First there are unique items at Publix that you just wont find at other stores.  Second their quality is top notch and presentation and store appearance sets the standard for others to follow.  Last Publix's brand items (made for and carrying Publix name) are a grade above and (my opinion) much better than the same that you find at the other Food Stores.

While Publix doesn't match other's prices or sales and many things are a little higher you can really find great deals, even on premium products, when they are put on BOGO sales.  I like shopping at Publix because I never have ever got a bad item that I wish I had not purchased.

I find it interesting that the response to the better service at Publix is to add those self-serve check-outs.

At Sam's, boneless skinless chicken breast is regularly $1.77/pound and it is good stuff. Aldi sells this product for a little more, but way less than Publix.  Publix has some good buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) deals and some good prices on sale items, but otherwise they are very pricey.  Their  house brand of premium ice cream is great and it is often BOGO, so stock up then and save money.  It is also a full half gallon, not the scaled back size that has become commonplace in recent years.

A smart shopper will not restrict  grocery shopping to any one store.

Look for imported goodies at Big Lots, which has plenty of edibles from afar that you will find at no other place in the Shoals.

Proud to say?  I don't do a lot of shopping at walmart, and I do love publix, but why would you be proud that you haven't "stepped foot" in walmart?

For some reason my dogs prefer old Sam's dog food over any other brand. That is the only generic product I buy at Wal Mart. any thing else will be name brands, but really I would rather pay more to get my stuff at Publix.

I'm not to proud to step into any store for a bargain.

I have seen the boneless skinless chicken ******* at Publix on sale for $1.99 per pound on more than one occasion since they opened in Florence and it was available at that price in small packages but still, Wal-Mart has it for $1.97 everyday and Sam's at $1.77 every day. It is not uncommon to find beef or pork at Publix for less than Wal Mart prices but about the same price as Foodland & Belle Foods. I tend to shop at different stores for different needs and I like the self check out at Wal Mart because it's quick and easy.

Anyone noticed that Publix has just about ceased offering to take groceries to your car? Frankly I don't care much if they do or don't but if they're going to quit offering then they should put some more cart corrals in the parking lot.

Maybe a walmart credit card with the discount as cash back on your statement each month.  Other states walmarts give a discount for using a Walmart cash card at the pump but that is illegal in Alabama (stations cant sell below wholesale here.)

I'm betting that Wal Mart has seen the financial effects of Publix opening in their front yard! What I am sick of with the Wal Mart behemoth is the new grocery store they're putiing on Florence Blvd. behind the bowling alley! They've got the street closed off and tore up and it's very aggrevating to get to any of those businesses on the service road through there! The fact is the only reason they're putting that store in is becuse of the Foodland & Belle having all the grocery business in that section of town. There was a time that Wal Mart didn't worry about the smaller chains, but there has to be some fear there for them to build 2 new stores in the area!

I agree. While I have my problems with WalMart, like the store here in Muscle Shoals is probably the worst managed store of any kind I have ever seen , we still mostly do our grocery shopping there, and pick up other stuff as well.

Since Publix is on the other side of the Tennessee Ocean, I have not been there yet. Spent some time working in Key West a couple of years ago, and there was no WalMart there, so I went to Publix. I like the store, and for sure they had a plethora of things , but the price was pretty high, and I don't really need a huge variety.

Bought some Tbond steaks at FoodWorld before they changed to Bella, and they were the absolute worse steaks I have ever had. Should have taken them to the cobbler to retred my old Tony Lamas. Even tried crock potting them overnight and they were still too tough, Never went back to Food Land.

If you think the MS store is managed badly, go into the Russellville one. A complete nightmare to find any workers to help you.

I don't have enough hair left to put up with even less professionalism, I'd probably pull out what little is left.

I highly recommend your suggestion.  That leaves clear access to the scanners for me.  I'm surprised it took them so long to install them in this store.  They are common in Walmarts all over the country.  Next best thing to the card reader on the gas pump.  I suppose you think those are job killers too?  Successful businesses don't exist as a social safety net.  They exist to make the most profit for their investors and owners at the least cost.  The fact that they provide opportunities for employment is a happy consequence of doing business not the reason they exist.
