I ain't writing about this any more.  I'm sort of disappointed about the replies.  Not one person was concerned about people losing their jobs.  Many cashiers are gone, the door greeters are on the chopping block, the doors are locked at the garden center(those people are called seasonal now).  Has everyone lost the ability to care for fellow humans?

What do you suggest we do jt? Boycott them so they need even less employees? Don't you care about others that are losing their jobs, or ONLY walmart employees? I said what I saw. Before the self serve you could stand in line and they wouldn't open all the check out lanes. Maybe during the holidays they had them all manned and open, but certainly not day to day on the occasions I was  there. I also didn't like the cashiers allowing people with more than 20 items go through the 20 items or less lanes when I was standing there behind them with maybe three or four items, but they did that too. IF I'm in the "regular" check out with a lot of items and someone comes up behind me with only a handful of items I let them go ahead of me, if they haven't started checking my things through. But when someone is in the 20 or less with obviously more than the limit they should be asked to go to the other checkouts.

I remember when Wal-mart had a sign up at the register that said if there were 3 or more people in line, another register would be opened. That sign didn't stay up for very long.

It's not just Wal-mart that has several registers but you will only see 3-4 of them open.

What about K-mart? They closed their garden center a few years ago, what happened to those employees?

jtDavis, if you owned a business, would you not do what you had to do to save/make money?

I remember those signs, and it seems to me they were there during the lifetime of Sam, but were taken away shortly after he died.

Seems WalMart is following the Kmart model of how to pizz their customers off. I quit going to Kmart because I just refused to stand in that long one line to get whatever I wanted. More than once, I have left an entire basket full of food and other stuff in the isle at WalMart and gone home.

I have to need something awfully bad to stand in a long line to get it.

I 'm not gonna boycott Wal Mart.  I aint gonna use the self scans.  As far as the cashiers refusing to check over 20 items, if they tried that , it would be a fast trip to the unemployment office.  I think that is proof that the education system is failing.  People of both sexes and all different races cannot count to twenty(20).

They can count. It's just that in this day to many people feel entitled to break the rules if they don't like or agree with them, and also in this day a cashier knows if they speak up, the person breaking those rules will most likely go "ape****", cause a scene, demand to see their manager, hold up the line a lot longer, and they feel it's just not worth it. So go ahead and stand in line behind them but don't fret when others choose to "self check" and go on their way.

Come to the WalMart in Muscle Shoals. They still operate people cashiers and long queues, or go to Kmart, 1 cashier  and about 40 people in the queue.

I love Publix and was there two days ago.  I am amazed at their vegetarian section...it is wonderful!!!!  But I like that they have healthy options in most products, the staff is amazing, and when I didn't see a brand of bread I wanted the employee went right off to make sure none were just not out yet on the shelf.  Then he showed me where to tell them what I wanted and how happy they will always be to order anything I want that isn't on the shelves.  Another employee saw me looking at a product on a top shelf and offered to get one if I couldn't reach it...it was really nice since I always have that trouble.

I checked out and the person who bagged my groceries started out the door with my basket.  I was confused for a minute since no one has done that for years..lol.  She was so nice and asked me if I were sure that she couldn't take them to my car for me, and I have had the same type of experience each time I have gone there.

The vegetarian section alone and the other healthy foods I saw make the trip there worth it, but the employees are soo nice and offer to help, I get good selection, and it is clean and cheerful there.  The few products that were more expensive we will get on an occasional trip elsewhere, but they have me convinced for groceries

If we do, will you hire us even if you don't need us, or get us a government or union job where standing around doing nothing and getting paid for it is the norm? Again, before the self check out lanes all the old check out lanes were never fully "manned". Sometimes two or three, four, but never all of them, at least when I would go there. And sometimes too, get into a 20 or less lane behind someone with a full cart.  I don't want anybody to lose their job, but I didn't see anyone in that job to begin with. Yes, it is the wonderful dream that companies hire a lot of people to just stand around, do nothing, yet get a check. Seems to me that is what would happen IF all those lanes had living breathing cashiers as you long for. Face it, the days when people could get a job, or had any kind of job assurance are gone.

Why would you even want to shop at Wal-mart? There's plenty of other grocery stores or do you have problems with those too? Are you one of those employees of Wal-mart that was fired for some reason or another?

BTW, I have been refused several times at those 20 or less check-outs because I had more than 20. There was no one in line so I thought it wouldn't hurt. The cashier didn't see it that way, & wasn't a problem for me at all. She was just doing her job.

Then you were fortunate not to be there on Christmas Eve.  But your point is valid.  Rarely were all the lanes manned.

Since I expect no service from Wal-Mart, the self-serve checkouts (which I really don't like using) will be something I use when I only have a couple of items, and won't think twice about.

I said 4 registers with a limit of 20 items. You said they removed several of the 20 items or less cash registers. How many is several?

In trouble? Where did I say I got in trouble?  The cashier was very nice, told me she would get in trouble if she checked me out when I had more than 20 items. (I had 26) I had no problem going to another register. In fact, we used the self-serve check out.
