War Is a Government Program

By Sheldon Richman

"Wars are seldom caused by spontaneous hatreds between people, for peoples in general are too ignorant of one another to have grievances and too indifferent to what goes on beyond their borders to plan conquests. They must be urged to the slaughter by politicians who know how to alarm them."

Of course War is a Gov issue!!! Think about it.. how many Middle Easterners have you ever hated???

NONE, until all this came up and the propaganda came up over Iraq and all... now they are hated, because the "mindset" says that is what we are supposed to do.

The SAD thing is that now, the entire world hates us now... they think the USA is one arrogant, horrible nation!!! Heard that on O'Reilly... maybe he was wrong?

Well, yes, but there's been popular sentiment for a war in the Middle East going back to the first OPEC embargo in 1973. Just as the anti-OPEC (anti-Arab) hysteria was loosening, we got the Iranian Hostage Crisis. It's just that it took us almost thirty years to get an adminstration stupid and crazy enough to want to start a war in the Middle East.

I'm rock-bottom sure that the Reagan administration wanted to go to war against Sandinista Nicaragua, but there was just no public support for that. Also, I think after Grenada the administration realized just how difficult it is to fight a war.

You might not be old enough to remember this, but throughout the Seventies editorial cartoonists had free rein to indulge in the most virulently anti-Arab stereotypes, so long as the big-nosed maniac with the scimitar was labeled "OPEC." Vanessa Redgrave was blacklisted in Hollywood for voicing support for the Palestinians when she accepted the Oscar for "Julia." Seventies action movies were chockful of Arab, almost always Palestinian terrorists. I honestly can't remember any anti-Iranian stuff in the media, except for the joke about Reagan nuking Tehran once he was sworn in, but I'm sure it was there. And then there was all that anti-Saddam sentiment that kicked up in the Gulf War. I believe it: by 9/11 there had been a latent popular appetite for a war in the Middle East for almost thirty years. It was like something smoldering in the landscape, waiting for just the right hot, dry wind to fan it into a fire.

I'll also say this, though, if it weren't for 9/11, the Bush administration couldn't have got enough popular support for invading Iraq. I'm sure they would have tried, but I don't think they could have got it done.

Makes me wonder if Jimmy Carter was set up on the Iran thang to get Reagan in office. I can help but wonder if 9/11 was a setup by GOD knows who. and I don't understand why we the people fall for all the lies they tell us.

Thank the liberal MSM for not reporting? Yeah Right,The Liberal news media is the word used by the conservatives and the right wing so they can blame someone for their goof ups.the media is not Liberal because if it were then you would see the truth as to what is really going on. the media is very conservative and not showing you the truth in Iraq or Washington,D.C. Your Media leans way to the right and always has!

So, Why do republicans like some government programs like war that cost so much more, when republicans or against government programs?
