If you are a member of the YMCA in Florence, then I highly recommend that you do NOT use the locker room. Just come dressed to work-out and then get in your car and leave when finished. Do not bring in your wallet, a gym bag, jewelry or cash. Eventually it *will* get stolen by some low-lives that prey on the locker rooms.

Another man and I had *both* of our lockers broken into at the same time (yes, we both had locks on them). These thieves are somehow "jimmying" combination locks open, going through gym bags and taking cash from wallets. Between the two of us, the thieves took about $75, an expensive bracelet, and a credit card. Whatever their methods of getting lockers open so quickly, they are experienced and very efficient at it. These aren't just random people swiping something once in a while, they know what they're doing and do it constantly.

The man at the counter told me that thefts happen constantly around there and that even if your stuff is locked up it isn't safe. I obviously learned this the hard way, as this is the *second* time I have had my locker broken into within the past month. I guess this time I have learned my lesson, I will never use the locker room again. From now on, I will just get into my car all sweaty and go home and shower.

Apparently, one guy had $500 in cash stolen from his locker a while back (yeah, it's dumb to bring that kinda jack in a place like that). Other people are constantly complaining about thefts. Whoever is doing it has made bank.

The ironic thing is that the culprit(s) probably don't even pay any dues. The YMCA is a charitable organization, so only people who can afford to pay have to pay. I have to pay and yet my s*it gets stolen by people who get a free ride. Typical.

well, that brings up something that disturbs me. you make the point that you have to pay to belong to the ymca. exactly! if you have a family and work for a living you get NO breaks on the yearly fee. but if you are low income, whether a kid or senior citizen you get a break. so families with kids who could really use the facility must pay the full price in order to be a member of the y. why can't we make it equally available for EVERYONE? i was a member for several years but my kids(two kids and mom and dad who both work) could not afford to join. it's wrong.

Oh, there's no doubt it's a member (probably a free-loading member as I said before). Could be an employee, but I doubt it.

I am thinking about canceling my membership over this. As I said, this is the second time it's happened to me. Gold's Gym is looking good right now. Yeah, they're more expensive, but maybe that will help keep the riff-raff away.

And the guy who invented the combination Master Lock = FAIL. Looking on youtube there are numerous videos showing how to make a "shim" out of a soda can that will pop the lock open in a couple of seconds. I guess they didn't have time for much testing when the lock was invented.
Thank you so much for the information! I had no idea. I usually take my bag in and put my wallet and my phone in there along with my keys. I guess I will not be taking anything in from now on. That is really sad. I have four kids and they like to leave their things behind in a locker when they change to go swimming...Again, thanks so much for the information.

Lock Pick

Is there a lock that is a deterrent? I'd like to buy one.

Before you cancel the membership, have a little fun at the thieves' expense. I could think of MANY offending items to put in my locker to turn off a thief, or at least make him think more than twice about doing it again. Use your imagination and give 'em a little payback. Wink
I gave up my membership because my kids were being bullied by a bunch of the "no pay" thugs. I was tired of paying for them to come in and abuse my kids. When I complained to the staff, they refused to investigate. I don't mind paying extra so someone with less money can enjoy the benefits of the Y, but I refuse to be taken advantage of by those same people while the staff ignores the situation

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from and have noticed it myself.

While the young people behind the counter all seem very nice, the management doesn't seem to really care about stuff like this from what I can tell. They just seem to brush it off as an expected event that happens every so often and claim they can do nothing about it. If I were in charge, the theft of members' stuff would be my *first* priority to stop. Perhaps one solution would be to assign a couple of permanent locker room "supervisors," someone paid just to sit and observe who is using which locker.

The Y, as I said, is not for profit so I suppose it's natural they don't really care all that much if they lose members. From what I can tell, there isn't any urgency to solve these thefts.

The staff at the Y has a no care attitude. That's why we left and joined Golds. The staff at Golds (or any private club) knows happy customers will keep them in business.
