"I believe education functions best when it is administered and regulated at the local level. Because of this, I believe we need to abolish the federal Department of Education. We also need to ensure access to charter schools, offer tax incentives for school choice (including religious and parochial schools), and protect the rights of parents to educate their children at home."

He just lost my vote. Those dumb bells in Montgomery need the Federal government telling them what to do or else we'd all still be getting out of school for the moth of September to pick cotton.
BTW, do you realize private school teachers are not paid anywhere near as well as public school teachers. If better pay = better teachers, then why send your child to a private school?
The Federal Department of Education is as about as useful as ti-ts on a boar hog.

In most cases private school offer better discipline and a better education. The Federal government restricts teaching in many ways. In a private school they don’t have to allow a kid with a mental disorder to disrupt class. They teach a true education and not the brain washing stuff the government wants them to.
It is a fact that inner city schools and schools that are majority Hispanic or black don’t do near as well as an all white school. That’s not racist it is just the plain facts

Skeptik...what is wrong with abolishing the Dept of Ed? I only see this as a huge plus. While they are at it we need to get rid of the teachers union.

I'm no "big government" fan but the fact is this: American Education is failing our kids. Bush knew this when he instituted the poorly implemented No Chld Left Behind policy but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

It is a fact that Americans are not adequately educating kids in math and science. Countries such as India and especially China are about to eat our collective lunch and bypass us as the world's new superpowers. America will be an intellectual wasteland in just one generation.

THIS IS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. Hell, it's not even "waiting" is IS happening NOW.

We can stop it is we have some bold leadership from the top down that can stem this disaster.

Southern states (especially Alabama) need governance from someone other than the people who man our state board of education. These are the people who allowed Alabama high schools to offer a diploma with drastically reduced graduation requirements because Alabama kids just aren't smart enough for regular diplomas.

These are the same people who undermine science by claiming that evolution is "just a theory."

I fail to see the value in allowing the federal government pay for parents to send their kids to private (especially religious) schools. Pulling our best and brightest kids from public education and placing them in private schools where their education if left to the whims of public opinion is insanity.
I ran into Wayne Parker at the Burger King in Athens Wednesday afternoon. It was not pleasant. He frankly looked as if he was eating his fingernails and living on coffee and Mt. Dew and caffeine pills for a month. Yet, he was not glad handing. No, he was standing in front of the doors, blocking both for entry and exit and talking on the cell phone. I was ready to leave and politely cleard my throat. He never looked up. I did it again, and he looked at me. I smiled and made a motion of pushing the doors open to get outside. He ignored me. I finally said, "Pardon me, I am trying to exit." That didn't work. He had to have heard, as I was about 1 foot from his ear. I finally just yelled, "Shoo! Scoot, let me out of here --- please, Peanut, get out of the door, people are trying to get in and out here, what is wrong with you?" He moved forward -- not sideways about three inches. I said, "That ain't gonna cut it Einstein" and shoved the door open giving him a bit of a jolt.
He moved about an inch and I shoved the door as far open as I could. He was still there blocking the doors when we left, about 3 minutes later.

Now, I always thought he looked like a feminine water-based spray hygiene product, but seeing him in person -- the man honestly looked like a praying mantis ready to start sucking the precious bodily fluids out of some prey.

Now God knows I am winning no awards on looks, but that was not pure genetics, it looked like was some small carnivorous insect.

That ain't no way to win votes, because I have told everyone I know and plan on telling even more at coffee hour at church tomorrow! Episcopalians do not like rude. Standing in front of a door and blocking it at that in both directions! Good Lord! How was that man raised! My grandmother was waiting in the car, there having been no sale at Marshall's in Madison, and she finding it "just awful what they do to those little chickens and calves." 90 years old, sunny and 80F, the car not running wo no air, and she can't figure out the windows, and all she wanted was a vanilla milkshake and some fries! And me with my simple diet of 3 of those double stackers, large fires and onion rings and a jumbo Dr. Pepper! I had been to the doctor and my BP was 121/72 so I dared to not eat a peach!

Nasty man, I found him, all around. Rude, rude, and rude. Wayne Parker: just too rude for Alabama.

Do you realize that private schools do a lot better job of educating our kids than government schools and at about halve the cost? Do you realize that home schooled kids do better than private schooled kids at almost no cost?

Wayne Parker just got my vote with his stance to rid this country of the federal Dept. of Education. Our country would be better off without it.
''Do you realize that private schools do a lot better job of educating our kids than government schools and at about halve the cost?'' Not everyone can afford to go to a private school.

Republicans hate public education! Republicans put their brats in private church schools. Republicans hate public education because they hate school taxes.

Do you realize I have a post graduate degree in education? You will never convince me of that. Where do your children attend school?
Hey Hon,
Ain't "halve" a verbal form of "to halve" meaning to divide into two parts?
I halve, thou halvest, he halves
We halve, you halve, they halve

I think "half" is what you get when you divide 4 by 2.

These Koolaid drinkers do not even know what the D of Ed even does.

Nor have they ever suffered through grading essays from "academy" and "private Christian schooled" or "home schooled" students. I am talking about the infamous "their/there/they're transmutation," "mystery apostrophes" and "You mean that Israel almost touches Africa and was not a country for nearly 2000 years until 1948?"

But as our old clerk Lori when called on her grammar and spelling left in a note: "I only humann."

Actually, it was the NRC who complained about her, not the staff! She was very happy in the Xerox room, by the way and very fast and tidy in her work once the forced change was realized.

I am sure that most everyone reading this will acknowledge that in a straight up comparison the many of the children who have been afforded a private school education will score better on tests. Research shows and I contend that the reason most of them do so well is because they come from a home environment that encourages the value of an education. They have parents who provide opportunities for them that encourage learning. And it shows-the teachers jobs are actually a bit easier in some instances.

But I haven't heard Wayne Parker say what he would do to ensure that those that can least afford the basics in life will get a good education.

What would he do? Will the private schools that take vouchers be required to take any child that comes to the door with a voucher? Would the child with real learning problems be admitted and if so who will look after the needs of that child?

Will the church schools that take a voucher use the federal funding to teach their religion? Is that what we want? What would happen if one of those religious schools was a radical religion that promoted people blowing up buildings and flying airplanes into them?

Is this what Mr. Parker advocates? I wish I could say that Wayne Parker had said anything during this campaign season that offered a real solution to all of the many problems of our country. But all I have heard from him is off the wall ideas that serve to scare people and enrage them. That isn't what I want in my Congressman.

I want the person that represents my community in Washington to be smart, to be accomplished, to be caring of all Alabamians--not just the ones who are like him. I am really sorry that I haven't seen one thing from Mr Parker that shows me that he has any real intelligence. He has spent most of his time and a lot of peoples money attacking his opponent--with what appears to be all lies. If he was willing to go that low to win...why would we want him?

I wish the Republican's had put up a better candidate. Surely they had someone better-because this one is a real goober.

Do you realize I couldn’t care less about your post graduate degree in education? It would be a waste of time trying to convince you that private schools do a better job of educating our kids, even though the evidence is overwhelming that indeed they do.

Good grief.

You can’t be serious.
I taught in both public and private schools locally and the children in the public system here were afforded many more opportunities than children in the private school. The homogenous aspect of the private school put all the students on the same level since they were from similar economic and racial backgrounds. But in the long run, that was a disadvantage for the private school students rather than an advantage. My children attend public school.

Beg your pardon but, yes they do, both locally and nationally.

OK, you are partially correct - but for for the wrongs reasons.

Yes, taken as a whole, private/home schoolers do perform better on standardized tests. But that is such a blindingly unfair comparison.

If you compare apples to apples by comparing upper middle income students of private schools with the same upper middle income students from public, you will find that those public school students perform about the same or a smidgen better than private.

Then I guess he won't be votting for a 62% pay raise like Little Parker Griffith did. The raise is the only thing that matters and I ain't votin fer Griffith because of it.

Why is it advantageous for those "dumb bells" in Montgomery to take direction from those "dumb bells" in Washington ? Besides it wouldn't hurt some of these kids too pick a little cotton. Trust me it won't kill ya.
There are much poorer countries doing a much better job educating their kids. Maybe if we spent a little time on mathematics and grammar and English and reading and a little less time on polar bears, bullies, conflict resolution, environmentalism and showing Algore's movie, maybe we would all be better off! They could even let 'em go out on the playground and play tag and other games and let somebody learn what it's like to lose, maybe they'd be better prepared for life.
