Large dog in plane’s cockpit likely caused fatal crash, NTSB says

A 90-year-old Iowa pilot’s decision to let his large dog ride next to his small plane’s flight controls likely led to the crash that claimed his life two years ago, federal investigators announced this week.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s final report on the June 2017 accident at Monticello Regional Airport in Iowa concluded that Jerry Naylor’s canine companion – which weighed an estimated 70-75 pounds – interfered with his ability to land.

Investigators wrote that the probable cause for the crash was “the pilot's decision to fly with his large dog in the two-seat, light sport airplane, and the dog's likely contact with the flight controls during landing, which resulted in the pilot's loss of airplane control and a subsequent aerodynamic stall when the airplane exceeded its critical angle of attack.”

Naylor’s son, investigators say, told them that “the pilot had installed a homemade, removable, plywood device to prevent the right-seat passenger (or his dog) from inadvertently contacting the rudder pedals during flight,” despite the device not being approved for installation in the plane.

“After the accident, the witness saw the pilot's dog running out of the cornfield where the airplane had crashed,” the NTSB wrote.

His son told The Gazette newspaper after the crash that Naylor had been flying since 1945.

“He was just one of those guys that even though he was 90 years old you wouldn’t think twice about asking him to help you with something because he would be right there to hustle and go, go, go,” added Charlie Becker, the executive director at Camp Courageous, an organization that assists individuals with special needs and where Naylor had been a board member since the late 1980s.

Big flightless bird kills its owner after stumble in Florida

A large, flightless bird, similar to an emu and native to both Australia and New Guinea, killed its owner when the man fell down on his property in Florida, authorities said Saturday.

According to The Associated Press, the Alachua County Fire Rescue Department told The Gainesville Sun that a cassowary killed the man Friday on land near Gainesville, likely using its exceedingly long claws. The victim's name was not released, but reports said he was apparently breeding the animals.

TEXAS PET OWNER DEAD, MAULED BY 2 PIT BULL TERRIERS: POLICE

"My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell. When he fell, he was attacked," Deputy Chief Jeff Taylor told the paper, according to AP.

Cassowaries are similar to emus and stand up to six feet tall, weigh as much as 130 pounds and have bright blue heads and necks. But that's not all that makes them distinctive.

According to the San Diego Zoo's website, cassowaries are the world's most dangerous bird, boasting a four-inch claw on each foot.

"The cassowary can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick. Powerful legs help the cassowary run up to 31 miles per hour (50 kph) through the dense forest underbrush," AP quoted the website as explaining.

AP said the fate of the animal in the Florida encounter was not known as of Saturday evening.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

McDonald’s guard shoots naked man who attacked 88-year-old customer

A 29-year-old man was fatally shot by a McDonald’s security guard Sunday afternoon after causing chaos at two neighboring fast food restaurants. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department obtained by Yahoo Lifestyle, the suspect crashed his car into a Carl’s Jr. restaurant in Palmdale, Calif. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the man had fled the vehicle and run across the street to a nearby McDonald’s, taking off all his clothes in the process.

Armed with a knife, the unidentified man ran into the McDonald’s, where he stabbed an elderly customer, described by local affiliate KCAL 9 as an 88-year-old man dining with his grandson. Authorities say the man is in stable condition.

The assailant then exited the restaurant, attacking a guard employed by McDonald’s on his way out. The guard responded by shooting him in the upper torso. The suspect, described as a Hispanic male, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“I see a man standing right here,” witness Irvin Diaz told KCAL 9. “And all I heard was ‘pop, pop.’ And I came over and saw this man on the ground. He was naked, holding his stomach.”

Homicide detectives have launched an investigation into what might have prompted the attack.

Kentucky burglary suspect shot after breaking into home, allegedly undressing in child's bedroom

The girl's mother, Tina Burton, told the television station her daughter was in bed when she heard a noise as Oliver broke into their home and began undressing.

"She was really smart," she told WDRB. "She hid under the cover, turned her light down, turned her volume down on her phone to text me. When she peeked under the cover to see where he was at, she got up and ran away. She went to the back room. And I think that was really brave and smart of her."

Oliver -- wearing nothing but his underwear -- then went from the girl's bedroom to the kitchen where he encountered Burton's boyfriend, Ali Bracey.

"I told him to get out, and he didn’t want to move. And he growled at me," Bracey said

A physical struggle then broke out, with Bracey striking Oliver with a broom before he began to be overtaken "due to the suspect's size," according to an arrest report obtained by WDRB.

After yelling for help, Burton got a gun from her bedroom and handed it to her boyfriend, who then was able to get up and fire several rounds at Oliver.

Bracey said that other neighbors agreed with his use of force.

"Everyone has actually commended me on what I did. There hasn’t been any real backlash other than [Oliver's] family," he said. "But everyone in the neighborhood has commended me on what I did."

Oliver was arrested a short time later and transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries before he was taken into custody, WDRB reported. When taking his clothes off in the home, police said that Oliver dropped a small bag of heroin.

During a court appearance on Monday, Oliver was in a wheelchair as a judge noted a lengthy criminal record and set a $50,000 bond.

Burton, who credited her oldest daughter's quick thing(sic) from preventing something worse from happening, said she has no intention of moving out of the neighborhood anytime soon.

"We’re going to stay," she told WDRB. "I’m not going to let anyone run me out of my home."

Florida great-grandma fends off 300-pound burglar with a baseball bat: cops

Florida great-grandmother, armed with a baseball bat on Sunday taught a 300-pound burglary suspect, who police said tried to break into her car a valuable lesson: Don’t mess with grandma.

Clarese Gainey, 65, heard banging coming from outside her Gainesville home when police said she spotted 37-year-old Antonio Mosley attempting to break into her car, FOX35 Orlando reported. Mosley allegedly charged at her, but Gainey was reportedly prepared.

“I mean I popped him! I said 'Biya!' he said, 'Auuugh! You hit me!'” Gainey told the station.

Mosely then ran off in only his boxer shorts to a nearby mobile home with a gash on his head, reports said.

“I put a good one on him! But he's in jail. I ain't gotta worry about him no more. I bet you won't mess with that green goblin there, no more!” Gainey told FOX35, referring to her green car.

A police K-9 unit tracked Mosley to the mobile home, where they said they found the 5-foot-6 burglary suspect wearing a pair of pants with cocaine in its pocket, Gainesville station WGFL-TV reported.

Mosely was held in the Alachua County Jail on $20,000 bond. He faces burglary and drug possession charges.

Looks like a job for 'Toe Bro.'

I can't believe some of the shows on today.  Man sometimes I wonder if we didn't have it better when there was just three channels on.  One thing is for sure with as many channels as there are today, thankfully we have remote controls.  I remember (dating myself) having to get up, run to the TV, just to change the channels.  Today you'd really get your exercise.

Back to the shows on cable today.  Some of those shows I just can't find the interest in.  My 600lb life?  Really?  How about Pimple Popper and some of the other things.  I mean you really have to be careful if you decide to eat in front of the TV just what you are going to have flash up there on the screen.  Then there are the Reality shows that are anything but.  My wife loves the Reality shows but to me most of those are just DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA with a side of arguing, fussing, and fights thrown in for good measure.

Then on one of the channels they have a show about "Sister Wives" or can anyone say polygamy.  I think that's still illegal most places so what are these channels trying to do stir up interest in it and create a new interest in legalizing it?  We are legalizing marijuana in many places and pretty much legalizing infant murder on demand in some states as well as going with legalizing gay marriage why are we restricting the number of marriage partners we can have then?    I mean if the definition for marriage is up for redefinition then what are the new limits?   For that matter when are people going to start being able to marry pets and animals?   The question when you start something where do you end it comes to mind.

Okay back to the topic/subject at hand.  I agree I love reading about crazy and weird things from time to time and granted many of the things we discuss on here could easily fit into that strange category.

Oklahoma woman accused of starving kids, feeding them ***** (f e c e s)

An Oklahoma mother has been charged with child neglect, accused of starving her children and feeding them dog *****.

The Tulsa World reports that 34-year-old Mary Elizabeth Moore was charged in Delaware County court this month.

The children, aged 5 and 3, are severely malnourished and have been placed on a special diet with nasal feeding tubes. They are in state custody.

An affidavit says the older child told Department of Human Services workers that she ate dog *****. The arresting officer noted the child had parasitic pinworms.

The girl also told investigators that her mother's boyfriend "throws bottles" at her younger sibling.

The affidavit says Moore denied starving her children and feeding them dog *****. Her court-appointed attorney, Lee Griffin, didn't immediately return a phone call Saturday seeking comment.

Cal State campus ditching 'Prospector Pete' mascot after complaints that Gold Rush hurt indigenous people

California State University's campus in Long Beach is ditching its longtime mascot amid accusations of racism and officially moving to pick either a new symbol or have no mascot at all.

The university ditched its "Prospector Pete" character in September after criticism that it was offensive to indigenous people.

The supposedly offensive mascot was born when the campus opened in the 1940s, with founding President Pete Peterson’s comment that he “struck the gold of education” by creating it, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But students have come to see the mascot not as a tribute to their founder or to California history, but rather as a representation of the violence caused to Native Americans and others during California’s Gold Rush era.

Last year, the university moved the statue of the mascot away from a prominent place on campus due to the outcry.

A statement on the university website said the Gold Rush was "a time in history when the indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence and threats of genocide." (Whether the NFL's San Francisco 49ers should be worried about their nickname is unknown at this point.)

The university is now asking students to vote on a new mascot, with choices including Pelicans, Sharks, Stingrays, Giraffes, Kraken (a sea monster from Scandanavian folklore), or even picking the option called “the Beach” that is sort of a no-mascot option.

Genesis Jara, president of Associated Students, Inc., told the Mercury News of San Jose that the options for students to vote on were selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by students.

The final decision will rest with President Jane Close Conoley.
