The only reason we cannot compete with this is due to the fact that gambling is not allowed in Alabama. We have the resources to make it happen. Just imagine a casino that was stationed next to the Mariott. Business in the town would triple. Also, this area has tried desperately to portray the Shoals as a great place to retire. A casino would be the perfect opportunity to draw those coveted retirees to the Shoals.

The funny thing about this state's stubborness and hatred toward gambling is the fact that if you go to Mississippi casinos you will see church buses from Alabama in the parking lot.
The casino is the catalyst for all of the parks and golf courses and the arena. Without the casino it would take several years to see any type of return on these projects. The casino also brings guaranteed business to these parks and an arena. I would also bet you that some of the gambling revenues are paying for those road improvements.
Hey. I agree. The rewards are there. We traveled to Va a couple of years ago, where they also have the lottery.... We passed through some rurals areas, with new school buildings that make the new high school in Muscle Shoals look drab. I was impressed. Funny thing is though, the same people that harp about gambling being wrong,... will buy a chance on a rifle, or a church raffle...or even a cake walk. And go to the fair and spend money on trying to win a toy? LOL.... its the same thing, youre taking a chance.....
Why doesn't Alabama allow a lottery? Or a casino? My sources say that Tunica is full of people from Alabama. Why would the politicians sit idly by and watch a river of money flow out of this needy state?

If the leaders there are playing politics, you know the same ones who got money from casinos to vote down gaming and the lotto, do what I did.

Move.

Sitting on their hands and pretending not to notice as the rest of the world passes them by is not leadership.

Minor correction: it is not the fault of our leaders. It is the fault of the citizens of Alabama. We had an election- the churches mobalized their croud- the pro lottery croud did not have organized leadership, and therefore did not get their people out to vote.
Many people in Alabama consider themselves "conservatives". Remember, by definition a conservative wants to keep status quo, is not open-minded to new ideas.

I talked to about 200 of my friends that wanted a lottery but didn't go out and vote. They just thought it would go because of the Gov.

If we EVER try to do anything to improve the economy in this state that has to be voted on, we should not put it on a special election. Put it on the ballot for president.
Oh we could compete with that, as wonderful as it is!!!

But people are going to have to get off their high horses and realize there is a LIFE out here that is screaming to be lived!!!

People are going to have to learn to NOT control other people in what others WANT... and everyone just HAS to come to their senses before Alabama is the lowest in the Nation.... again!

Kindred, as usual, you took the whole topic and summorized it in one sentence. I think we SHOULD have gambling and casino's BUT most of the citizens of Alabama don't so the question is: What are we going to do in the Shoals to fulfill the ill conceived promise to Bronner and company? Thank God for the good people of the Shoals Enviromental Alliance (John Crowder comes to mind, the only poster I know of on this board other than me) Veterans didn't become a strip mall. Will the City of Florence councilpersons come up with an alternative? Doubtful! Bronner will think up something to strip the land and wait for short term profits, then wash his hands! THE DOG
