Someone once said that we are a retirement community, well maybe yes and maybe no. Then there are some that saids we are not as big as Huntsville or Nashville, that is so right and I don't want us to be that big. But there are a few changes that we could have, but then again it takes a lot of money. Like a water park that they have at Point Mallard or Geyser Falls Water Theme Park in Choctaw, Ms. or a Civic Center like the one they have in Tupelo. Or maybe put some grills in the park so people won't have to bring their own. We have a lot of things here in the Shoals, but there is a few things that could make it better, so what would you suggest if any.

There are so many new things and improvements to Florence that there is not enough space on the forum to list them. Here's  my list: we need a city manager, not a mayor and council; Florence has to bring in new industries more high tech. right now no one is bringing  new industries to Florence; get with the governor to get Florence some new jobs like he does for Huntsville; have meetings monthly with managers of business located in Florence but owned by out of town companys to make sure they are happy with the area and what the city provides them; the new Florence northern bypass has been cancelled and no one knows by whom, this is needed to open up savannah highway and the central area and could later be built into Mississippi as Congressman Flippo had planned and approved back in the 80's; chishlom rd and the rest of cloverdale road should be 5 laned; a new interstate road with the option of adding train tracks should be build from Florence across interstate 65 to connect to the new Huntsville northern bypass road, this road should bypass Killen, Rogersville, Athens and Madison as they are mostly speed trap places, since this is where all the jobs are, we need a fast and safe way to drive to Huntsville to work daily; Florence takes in a lot of money in taxes but does not spend it wisely. All managers and supervisors should have an immediate pay freeze as their pay is way above average for this area, the whole management system need to be rebuild due to the power grab that as taken place over the years in order to increase managers pay. Employees cost of living increases should be the same amount that people on social security recieve each year. The number of employees having city furnished vehicles should be cut by one third; Dept. budgets should be looked at closely for cutting, the police dept. should be first to be cut, it has been mismanaged for years and with a budget of over 8 million dollars they could cut some, need to cut higher level officers and make more street patrolman, their back parking lot looks like a junk yard where the 3 stooges have parked all of those trucks and trailers; No tax money should be given to charity, that's not the purpose of tax money; a interstate road from north of Florence to Mobile should be build as soon as possible; Florence gets less state transportation money for new roads than anyplace in north Alabama, even in the shoals area. Since there is a beginning already of military items in Veterans park, the city should put a big effort into building a large metal building for displaying large military items such as tanks, apc, helicopters, airplanes maybe borrowing some displays from the Space Center such as rockets, jet planes and such and train engines, little kids love that kind of stuff and could learn lessons from it and we all know little kids control parents on vacations; Not sure about tennis courts but they could work; maybe have camper parking there again; have a special day for all the shoppers who shop in Florence, pass out water bottles on a hot day, maybe hotdogs and little items such as key chains, pens something with the name Florence Al on it,  show them that Florence appreicates them shopping here, find someone that knows how to repair pot holes and hire them; organizing stop lights would also help; Florence has limited main streets thru the city and they are overloaded now, find some way to speed up traffic thru Florence, maybe like no left turn that holds up traffic while waiting for a break to turn left; There is plenty more but running out of space. The Lauderdale county courthouse could also use a good cleaning out of people and depts. and policies.

I love the Shoals, just like it is in most ways ...although it would be nice to see some progress in some areas, like completion of road projects and repair of others... maybe a roundabout or two where needed. Maybe some driver education on how to use a turn signal.

As much as I've always been for the lottery and consolidation, it would forever change landscape of the relaxed little Shoals that it is..

The present transportation bill contains pork that drains off highway trust funds from construction of roads.  Cut the pork and build and repair roads.

JJ, Old Squirrelly Dawg suffers from a form of dementia one sees in some of the very old.  The self censorship most of us practice no longer works in his mental state.  Guess nurse should regulate hsi medications.

Roundabouts work nicely. BUT-ya hafta know how they're supposed to work and ya hafta pay attention...(which roughly translates to "hang the f$%& up before even thinking about entering one").

Massachusetts is full of them and traffic (lots of vehicles at a time) cruises smoothly through them usually....until somebody who doesn't know how they work gets caught in one.  Even then when that happens, most locals realize it for what it is and try to guide the clueless driver to the right position within the roundabout.

Too many people around here don't even know how regular intersections work-

Maaaaann..I can only imagine the carnage in a roundabout where *nobody has a clue* how it works.

Like Tommy Chong said in "Up In Smoke": "Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho! Hope yer not busy for about a month,  man!"     Save me a seat over at seven points.  I wouldn't miss it for the world.

National and regional character does enter in to it.  In London, the roundabouts (called circuses, as in Piccadilly Circus) work pretty well -- drivers tend to be tolerant. In German, there's strict attention to the rules and few wrecks. In Paris, the roundabouts are akin to roulette . Entering the one around the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile ahead of me, I saw a farmer, complete with beret, in an old Citroen (the sheet metal one that falls apart in a 10 MPH collision).  He made the sign of the cross, then gunned the little engine to enter (swear his eyes were closed).

The round-a-bout in Lawrenceburg? To start with if's two lanes. That should mean drivers will get in the right (outside) lane to make a right turn. Do they? No. Especially at the north entrance/exit. I've almost been hit there at least five times. I have noticed the street does narrow some in this last block, but it is still marked for two lanes. Obviously, I'm not in love with this type of traffic flow device.

No, you got dissed because you said Florence/Lauderdale County (the subject of the post) didn't allow concerts.

In Lebanon, Tennessee,  the city square is a roundabout and has been such for at least 60 years.. It functions very well.  The revered General Hatton (see photo below) looks sternly   down upon it from his perch in the center.  I have driven in this roundabout many, many times, since I visited often with relatives in Lebanon and also married a Lebanon girl.  With but little orientation, any marginally sentient human being should be able to confidently navigate a roundabout.   Given the often-avowed hostility to traffic lights expressed by local bumpkins (many of whom would not know a real traffic jam from blackberry jam), one would think that they would be eager to at least try this alternative!

I have lived in every kind of community from a village of 500 to a metropolitan area of 2 million. This "small college town" setting is my favorite.  The Shoals does not need "saving".  It most certainly does not need to be infested by the corruption of such reprobates as Lady Gaga.

Yes, we've listened to several of the good ole boy bands, but we would never pay to see them. If you've heard one, you've heard them all. Too bad they're not as good as some they think they are.

I prefer Hank Willimas, Jr., Charlie Daniels, etc. One of the best shows we've ever seen was Dwight Yoakam. He has a fantastic band. It's worth it to us to travel to see the better, well known bands.

If Bill Gray called someone a reprobate, I wouldn’t be surprised but I am disappointed in you with your judgment of Lady GaGa. How do you know she’s corrupt, wicked, or a drunken reprobate? How do you know she’s been rejected by God & beyond any hope of salvation? How do you know she’s morally depraved & unprincipled? I assume you do know what reprobate means?

I’ve seen interviews she’s given. She’s a very nice, quiet, shy person. I am so sick of seeing people judged because of the way they look, dress, or act when putting on a show. In one interview her Mother was with her, who said she didn’t approve of the way her daughter dressed or the way she presented herself because she & her husband are Christian people. But she went on to say she still loves her daughter & prays for her daily.

I suppose if someone called you, your wife or one of your children a reprobate, then they would be speaking the truth, even though they didn’t know you?

And no concerts with any big names will be allowed. Just John Boy & the Good Ole Boys bands.

Semi, just who in Florence isn't allowing these concerts? Is it the police? Is it the zoning office? Pray tell who isn't allowing them; inquiring minds (who understand what the word "allow" actually means) would like to know.

I know what "reprobate" means and I use the term in its general sense, not in the deranged Calvinistic sense to which you apparently refer. My American Heritage Dictionary lists the primary meaning of the word as "a morally unprincipled person."

I got yer morally unprincipled person right here--Lady Reprobate!:
