The Classic That Changed Our Perception of the Afterlife

In 1975, Dannion Brinkley was struck and killed by lightning. When he awoke twenty-eight minutes later in a morgue, everything was different. He had visited the afterlife, met thirteen angels, and been given 117 revelations about the future. In the years since, one hundred of the revelations have already come true. In Saved by the Light, now available in trade paperback for the first time, Brinkley shares his incredible story, revealing the truth about the afterlife and providing guidance from beyond about how we should live today.

A true story well worth the read.

Just as with many other subjects there is general disagreement, among the major denominations, and Religions, as to just what happens after death, to the person.  My personal belief/opinion as to what I believe the Bible teaches, looking at it from a Religious perspective, I view death as separation of the inner spirit from the outward fleshly body.

I believe that mankind is created a fleshly and a spirit/soul combination.  Our fleshly bodies come from the union of our parents or from human origins but our inner spirit/soul is created and given by God and whereas the birth process unites the, fleshly, body with the inner spirit death is the process whereby the inner spirit no longer is supported and relies upon the fleshly body as it's container.  As for what happens to our bodies I believe that the flesh dies and waste away, the Bible terms this process of decay as returning to Earth.  Essentially the body returns to elements or physical elements from which it originated whereas the inner spirit is what continues on, past death.  What happens to that spirit is the topic of dispute (and with many they would dispute that there is a spirit at all).

My personal belief is that our inner spirit is in a sleep state awaiting the return of Christ to resurrect it from the grave as Paul related to the Thessalonians in 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18.  I do not believe that the individual is aware and that essentially to them, to those that are saved, the very immediate, next, thing that they will see is Christ at the Resurrection but to the individual Christian it will be as being immediately (after death) as if they are in front of their Savior.  Others believe the spirit/soul is alive and aware and with Christ and able to perceive our relatives and dwells in a Spiritual state with God.

As for those who are not saved, their spirits/souls, I believe that their next awareness will be at their judgement before God and at that time their soul/spirits will awaken to awareness of their judgment for their sins whereas Christians will awaken to their Savior's presence at the time of the Rapture and from that moment they will dwell in their eternal appointed Heavenly home that Christ had prepared for them to dwell in.  I believe that their new Heavenly, Glorified, bodies that they will inhabit will be bodies without sexual orientation, color, or other things that make us distinct today but rather our future will be one where our bodies are without disease or corruption and all those things that we find troublesome today, in our earthly dwelling, will no longer apply.

For those who awaken to judgment it will be without arbitration but rather will be to address why they did not accept God's only offering for their sins and to then face judgment upon their earthly acts, including denial of Christ/God.  As to what happens after their judgment I am not dogmatic on.  I do feel that it's possible that the end state of some will be that their soul/spirit dies and just ceases to exist whereas others quite possibly or probably will continue to be in torment for their sins.

Lastly there is the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-31) where it appears, from the story, that there is immediate (after physical) death the being in Abraham's bosom (Heaven) for the Just and immediate judgment, being in torment, for the unjust.  Again there is nothing about this story that can negate my opinion, as voiced above, because as the soul/spirit/individual is concerned if it's in soul/spirit sleep, until it's awakening, then it would be as immediate to that individual as is described in Luke.  Luke may also be a parable for many reasons apart from an indication about what awaits us after death such as the need to respond and make a decision in our earthly life rather than waiting until we have reality in our face and that we only have now, human life, to make those decisions.

For now that's my two (ten) cents as to what my own opinions are.

"My personal belief/opinion as to what I believe the Bible teaches, looking at it from a Religious perspective"

....from a religious perspective I see none of the zealots on this forum as being on a list of the saved but  to the contrary candidates for the hell. I've never seen such evil intent against others as is demonstrated by the holy rollers on here.

I exclude myself as nowhere will be found evidence that I have made broad my phylacteries.

But it's OK you just dammed everyone to hell. That Christian Lite belief you

strut as if it's the only wish on a star game in your make believe heaven may

not be what you might think.

How exciting for you and the other three hundred and eighteen people to be

in attendance with you.

I agree, saying it's in the bible isn't proof. That's why I said those two would argue that point with you. They will tell you their "proof" is in the Scriptures. Most of them will swear that those scriptures is provable, that all you have to do is read them. If you still don't get it, they will "prove" it to you by explaining those scriptures.

Yes, COC stands for Christ of Christ. They will tell you they are the "only" church, they are the only ones going to Heaven, & they can "prove" that to you. OSAS is one kind of Baptist. They can "prove" to you that once saved, you are saved forever, no matter what you do. The majority of people/Pastor's in those two churches will beat you over the head with their proof.

When a person dies they are really dead plain and simple. I mean you can just look at someone and say "yep there dead". Not that hard at all. Physical proof plus what I've learned from Scriptures confirm this for me.

Ecclesiastes 9:5

For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Why do the dead "know not anything" ?

Psalm 146:4

His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Thats right he becomes totally unable to think because he is unconscious and unable to do anything at all really.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest.

Spirit and soul are not one in the same. Otherwise the bible wouldn't make a distinction between them. Careful study will show you this.

Your spirit is what gives life to your soul and body. Your soul can be thought of as who you are. Obviously your body is what houses both. You cant have one without the other. So when a persons soul and body dies the spirit goes back to God (Ecc. 12:7) who gave it to be returned at the Resurrection to once again give life to a persons body and soul. Till then a person is totally unconscious and D-E-D dead.

Most Christians do not believe in a Resurrection of the dead. They suggest a person immediately either goes to hell or heaven after death and are not really dead, but alive in a different location. I understand why they believe this so I do not mean to berate them or even blame them. It's just the deceptions are so clever and very hard to resist.

OSAS = Once Saved Always Saved?

What kind of Baptist?  Is it like kind like Southern Baptist or is found within kinds like SB?

Maybe better for a Baptist to answer.  Not here to challenging / critique anyone's beliefs.  I honestly do not know.

_________

OSAS means Once Saved Always Saved.

Freewill & Missionary Baptists believe you can lose your salvation. Southern Baptist & many other Baptist believe in OSAS. I was raised in a OSAS Baptist up until I was a young teenager, & couldn't support that belief anymore.
