What Is The Cause Of The Word-Wide Rise In Oil And Food Prices?

By Ibrahim Turner

What is in store for the billions of poor people around the world who live on $1 a day? What is in store for the relatively rich populations of America and Europe when fuel prices have greater and greater impact on already rising food prices, driven up by these same speculators?

I think it was refering to other places in the world because the U.S. of A pays at least 5.00 per hour. We have so much to be thankful for. We could be like those folks who only make $1.00 a day.

If they've never made more than a dollar a day, they have no frame of reference as to what it would be like to make more.

And according to the gloom and doom topics posted on forums, like this one, we should all just slit our wrists and go out whimpering.

They may not be able to afford gas but they still need to be able to afford food. In case you have not noticed, if the cost of transporting food and medicine increases, then the price for those items must increase to cover those costs.

As for your comment that, since they have never made more than a dollar a day, they have no frame of reference as to what it would be like to make more, I see your point. that means that if they have always gone hungry, they will not suffer as they have no frame of reference as to what it is like to have food...That's great to know, now I can have a peaceful night's sleep. After all, I got mine! Wink Wink Wink
i think it's more like this; if you raise or kill your food, live off the land, don't know what a pair of Levi's are, have never ridden in a car, get your drinking water from a creek, don't have utility bill, etc., you're not affected by the cost of anything. you simply keep raising or killing your food, hauling your water, repairing your shack, oblivious to market forces in the global economy. not a put down, nothing we can change, just the way things are.

Glad you're getting a good nights sleep for a change. Unless you're donating your entire fortune to world hunger, you can knock off the sarcasm...it doesn't become you.

What I posted is reality. You offered no solution...just criticism. Until you can offer a solution, lay awake and worry about it for a while.
The truly poor will do what their bretheren in South America did in WWII. With gas and tire rationing around the world, they continued to grow corn, beans, potatoes and the other crops they subsisted on for a thousand years. War and shortages marginally affected them. If they had a burro and cart, they might have to use wooded wheels instead of cast off car wheels and tires on the wagon.

Sassy,

Typical leftie thinking, they have to be sincere about every ill or hurt in the world. If they have the appropriate sorrowful thoughts, why that's all that matters. Also, explains why they take more antidepressants and suicide more often than conservatives.
The value of the dollar continues to fall as the nation continues to borrow money to finance a war we probably won't win. It's guerilla warfare in an urban environment. Think about it. Oil is traded based on the value of the dollar. As the value of the dollar falls it takes more money to buy the same amount of oil. Therefore, higher oil prices are passed on to the consumer who does not receive a higher wage to compensate for the falling value of the dollar. In order to alleviate some demand, we are using more corn to create ethanol which is found in many different gasolines. Therefore, more competition on the produce market. The cost of corn goes up. We feed corn to our livestock. The cost of livestock goes up. Oil affects everything. It is currently traded as a commodity. To even begin to combat the rising prices, we have to quit borrowing money from other countries.

When food prices go up they affect everyone. Yes, a farmer can continue to live off what he grows but even farmers barter and trade for goods they need but may not make. I think another reason people in third world countries are having such a rough time is because they are in a drought. Even if they plant, crops won't grow without water. That is not something we can help. The problem is that most of the countries offering aid to developing countries are in financial crisis and can't afford to give as much aid. It's just a sad situation.
The decline of the dollar is one major contributor but the main cause is that oil is traded on the futures market in hedge funds.(who pay very little or no taxes - loophole) China and India combined account for something like $9.1 Billion annually in increased consumption and hedge funds and university investments had something like $8.7 Billion annually. Not much difference between the two except India & China are consuming oil and the investors aren't using the oil. They just put the money into it on the assumption that when they sell it in the future it will be worth more. Oil companies make about 10 points on their investment, very small margins, but good profit in volume. I cant really in earnest blame a company for defending a 10 point profit margin. You are paying higher prices due MOSTLY to these 2 reasons and demand increases annually. Also this doesn't have to be a hit in the pocket book. Invest and smile at the rising cost, it's free trade your going to invest in oil costs one way or another.JMHO
MOBY, I see some of the right winger neocon conservatives group who hang out together don't see eye to eye with you. That is typical of the right wing neocons. See they only agree with people who think as they do, and these types have no heart for nobody, not even their own mother. They love Bush and they will argue with you to hell and back that Bush has been the best president ever. If you care or not if these types like you or not, Then you must agree with them. These types get very upset when someone disagrees with them and will go out of their way to discredit you with lies or whatever it takes. If you want them to like you, tell them you're a Bush fan and that you will be voting for the wife cheater McCain.
