Before anyone comments on the confederate flag, they should be educated as to what the civil war was about.

Blacks and some racist groups have turned it into a racist symbol FOR THEIR CAUSE.

Both sides are ignorant of the facts of the civil war.

For the racist groups...the war was not about slavery only.

For the blacks...the North had slavery before, and after the civil war.
I know it's highly controversial and some people purposely use it to inflame racial tension. But for some folks I think it's honestly nothing more than a distinct way of saying "I'm proud to be a southerner." We don't have flags with grits, bass boats, or coon dogs so the flag is the next best thing. Most of us can identify with Lynrd Skynrd. Do a Google search of images for the band. See all the confederate flags? I personally don't fly one because of the problems it sometimes creates but the bottom line is people's motives aren't always just tied to the civil war.

I just don't get it. Yes, we (most of us) live in the South. I'm pretty sure that none of us fought in the Civil War. We all live in the US (they have a flag for that).

The war is over. The South lost. Move along.

Thats a hell of a lot of disrespect for the men that fought and died in that war. Idiot!

No disrespect intended. I suppose if the people who wanted to fly the Confederate flag also flew the flags that honor other wars it would show that they were trying to honor all soldiers who fought in said wars. Why is a war fought against ourselves so much more important? Why does it deserve so much more respect than any other war?

....It's very possible your ancestors would be ashamed of your statement.

Are you getting your info from America's #1 gangster Mr. Hoover? COINTELPRO methods included infiltration, burglaries, illegal wiretaps, planting forged documents and spreading false rumors about key members of target organizations. Not to mention the man behind COINTELPRO was a known racist.
The flag is a representation of taking arms against this country. If people are comfortable with the Con Fed Flag then people should be comfortable with, for example, a Muslim walking around with shirts, hats, or flags of air planes hitting the towers.

I wonder if we tolerance would be practiced if that was to happen.

Both represent the same thing.
I view it as a symbol of a time when a whole region of men (and women) had the courage to stand together and face down the "powers that be" in Washington DC and not just cower and complain and take whatever they wanted to throw at us whether we liked it or not.

Much unlike today.

I'm sure our ancestors would be ashamed of what we have become...

I also belive that what the war WAS and what it became about could have peacefully been approached in a different manner and given time would have produced the same end results..
The Confederate battle flag should be a symbol of pride in our heritage however there are so many hate groups that have adopted the flag for their purpose that the image of the flag has been irreparably tarnished. It is very said that it has come to a point to where the hatred that some have used it to symbolize far outweighs anything decent about it. With that being said, I would never allow the Confederate flag to be displayed in any way at my home or my business.

Do you display the American Flag?

Some of what it represents is a group of people stealing land that wasn't theirs, killing women and children, scalping men for pay. Is this something to be proud of? I think not! But it's part of our history good, bad , or indiferent.

You don't see the American Indians slowly taking our heritage away from us. And from my perpective of our history they have much more right to.
It is sad that our flag has been adopted by radical hate filled groups, I do know there are many who understand the true meaning of the Confederate Flag and will always have great respect for the flag and the many brave souls who fought for states rights in this terrible time in our country's history I am not ashamed of both my flags The United States of America and the Confederacy.

If being used as a racist statement, it's wrong.

I think ya got the right idea, Joy. Like others have said-lots of hate groups have hijacked the Confederate battle flag (naval jack) for their own agendas. To me, it's a symbol of pride. I hate no one unless they personally give me a good reason to.

FYI-The flag carried by the Ku Klux Klan at rallies is usually the American flag. Yup. Ol' Glory. How come people don't usually view the Stars and Stripes as a "hate symbol?"

I am with you 100%. I had ancestors on both sides from the same families in the Civil war. We have pride in both flags. Our Heritige amd for freeedom. God Bless America. The radical hate groups use the flags (both) to incite and divide our country.
The definition of the word swastika is akin to a talisman, or good luck piece or emblem. It has been used for countless centuries by cultures around the world as a symbol of luck or prosperity. Yet we most closely associate it with the Nazi party of Germany, who adopted the swastika in 1920.

Any inanimate object or design can be associated with good or bad, and that association can be misunderstood or misconstrued. The Confederate flag is one of the most visible examples.
I've always felt the Civil War was more about the Federal Government wanting slave owners to free their slaves without compensating them for money they had spent on them than it was about ending slavery. Many plantations would have went bankrupt if they had simply freed their slaves without any compensation for their investment. I've always wondered if a peacefull end to slavery would have come about if the Federal Government could have paid the slave owners part of the money back. But then Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have to find legitimate work.

And I wonder in the near futrure how you will feel when the federal government tells you granny can't have the medication she needs to sustain her life a few more years because it's too expensive? Or you son or daughter can't have the operation they need to walk again after the accident because it's not approved under your federally funded health care provider? Maybe if it were YOU who needed the medication or procedure? At what point would you be willing to take up arms against the government? And how would you be remembered in history?
I think it's all in how you view it. I personally do not see the "Rebel" flag as a racist symbol. I actually grew up relating it to Lynrd Skynrd as a kid and just thought it meant we were southern and proud and didn't affiliate it with race until extremists from different races including black and white folks drew attention to it and made it such a symbol. I find it ironic that equality has ever been associated with either the north or the south of that era. "The Great Emancipator" (Abe Lincoln) was one of the biggest white supremacist of the period. That war was like most. All about money.
I never remember in any way my Grandparents , Mom or Dad ever saying anything about the Flag and we never said anything to our son about it.. My thoughs on the Flag as any other flag during a Time that is Honored by the ones fighting at the time though it was worth fighting for in there minds!

I am glad in my time , we never had to fight for the reasons so many did during that time. We only live a few mile from General Joe Wheelers Home and Sanders Castle .

No just my opinion the Confederate Flag .. means no more than in that Time the Confederates was fighting for what they beleived in. Maybe I confused you with my answer .

So, you think we should just forget the past?

As Mr. Hoover was the impetus to detect and arrest all Nazi agents the moment Germany declared war upon the US, and succeeded. But, was sternly against the camps for Japanese Americans, which liberals approved, who does that make him?
Lee was an abolitionist who never bought a slave and freed those he inherited. Grant was a slave owner and did not free his until the passing of the 13th amendment

I prefer the flag be used only during reenactments and historical events such as Confederate Memorial Day. Use of the stars and bars or first national might be more appropriate.

As the US/UK only imported less than six percent of the slaves during the middle passage and Brazil was the major importer, shouldn't we demand Brazil get rid of her flag?
The thirteenth amendment that almost was.

"Ohio Representative Thomas Corwin offered the amendment during the closing days of the Second Session of the 36th Congress in the form of House (Joint) Resolution No. 80. The proposed amendment would have forbidden attempts to subsequently amend the Constitution to empower the Congress to "abolish or interfere" with the "domestic institutions" of the states, including "persons held to labor or service" (a reference to slavery). In particular, the Corwin Amendment was intended to prohibit the Congress from banning slavery in those states whose laws permitted it."

The south did not want this. The North did. Those that think the war was about the south fighting to keep slavery are just totally wrong.

Corwin amendment.
