Not counting family members. Some of the few that I can think about:

1. Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, a man who rose from a child of sharecroppers to become one of the best coache's ever.

2. Elvis, a poor boy from Tupelo, Ms. who had no hope of ever making anything and became one of the best singers in all of history.

3. Mother Teresa, who helped the poor, the sick, orphaned and those who were dying.

4. Jesus Christ, a carpenter's son, who today millions upon millions are given hope and faith for what HE did.

5. George Jones, a poor boy from Texas, who became one of the best country singers of all times.

6. Mr. Sam Phillips, the founder of rock-n-roll.

7. Gen. Norman Schwarzkoph, a truly American Hero.

Hey Blues! Since your a George Jones Fan, I thought I'd share a story with ya!
My daddy was a Lauderdale County Deputy from 1969 (he started as soon as he returned from Vietnam where he was a Military Police Officer) until August of 1981, when he left the Sheriffs Department for a better job at TVA/Browns Ferry, where he was a security officer.
His first day on the job at TVA was my first day of school in the first grade! LoL!
My point in telling you all of this is during his time at LCSD, he arrested George Jones on multiple occasions for everything from Phone Harassment, DUI, PI, to Shooting Into An Occupied Vehicle.
Anyway, it was no secret that George liked the bottle, so just about every time daddy would have to go pick him up on a warrant, George would usually be drinking, so he'd have daddy & who ever was with him pull up a chair & George would grab his old guitar and start playing some tunes so he could buy himself enough time to finish off his bottle before his trip to jail! Daddy always said George played his best when he had a drink in him, especially if he knew he was gonna have to make a trip downtown!
They'd let him finish his booze, take him in & book him, let him sign his own bond, and then drive him back home to Creekwood! By then, it would be quitting time, and daddy could join him with a drink & some ****ed good music!
I know many good story's about George Jones.
He is a good one!!
Let`s see excluding family I would have to say
Mrs.Vera Williams my 5th grade teacher for believing in my talents.
Mr.Robert Mullens 9th and 10th grade electronics teacher. What he taught me really helped me out in my career in the military.
Coach Tandy Geralds my high school football coach for teaching me character on the field.
Mr.Gerald Mann one of the finest men I ever knew.A true christian.
Three out of the four have gone to be with the Lord now and I`m sure the angels rejoiced at their homecoming.
Per Blues request, not counting family members...

Jesus - author and perfecter of my faith (Heb 12:2)
Teachers - blessed with many encouraging teachers
Mentor/Friend - she had walked in my shoes
Beth Moore - through Bible studies she has written and seminars she has led
Corrie ten Boom - her courage, wisdom, forgiveness and peace through faith in God
Mother Teresa - her example of unconditional love, which she learned from the author
(In no particular order)

*a former employer who pushed and motivated me until I wanted to scream!=) He taught me so much & was very encouraging.

*Any single mother who takes care of her kids

*a former boyfriend who forced me to realize that first & foremost I had to worry about making myself happy instead of everyone else.

I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that 1st popped into my head.
Outside of my family.....

The co-worker at the Highway Department that told me to pace myself. I probably would have died that summer if I hadn't learned that.

My boss when I worked at the river construction company that showed me that leverage, literally, is everything, and confirmed the need to do well in school so that I would never have to clean another barge.

A couple of college professors that opened up whole new worlds for me.

A graduate school professor who taught me that sometimes it is WHO you know that counts, the rat-bastard.

CrustyGirlfriend - prior to wifedom - who opened up whole new worlds for me.
