Darden said an accumulation of 6 inches or more would make for a Top 10 snow event.

The Shoals received 5 inches of snow in 1985 and 1988.

“This certainly could be a top 10 or a top 15,” he said.

This says 15" at Muscle Shoals that New Years. I think it started on New Years eve '63 and continued until New Years day '64. I believe the paper said 16" in Florence and my cousin said her dad measured 17" in their flat back yard. I'm sure it varied.

My dad measured 16" of snow in our backyard. Smiler He went out to measure it first with our school ruler but had to come back in for the YARDSTICK!

Oh, and this was in Norwood Park, north Florence.
1963 the weather man stated flurries only for the night....By morning on highway 72 4 miles West of Tuscumbia it was 16- 17 inches. The wind was blowing hard and in some places snow drifts were 3 ft and higher....Highway 72 West was closed for 3 days as when the cars moved all they would do was push the snow and it would ball up under the vehicle. It stayed that way until it melted to the point cars run over the snow to knock it down some.
Side Streets stayed blocked for about two weeks as the Sun hardly ever came out and the Temp stayed below freezing...

I remember it shut Chatt down totally, so I drove to the shoals(had 4 wheel drive)and you guys were closed down too. I think it was Jan '88. That snow was deep!OK- I should'a read the paper today and I wasn't dreaming- "9.6 inches that fell Jan. 7-8, 1988". I knew it was a big one!
Bring out your 9.8 inch rulers guys!
