First Florence then Muscle Shoals and then Town Creek ... all gone. Seems like, at least if they are still there, Lawrenceburg, TN and/or Russellville, Alabama are the only two locations left unless you want to drive to Madison, Alabama.

I can totally understand why Florence closed, given it's shape and location and with the new road coming through but I believe it closed long before the Helton Drive extension was advertised. I heard that the Florence location was owned by an elderly guy who could do pretty much what he wanted, due to the agreement he signed with Dairy Queen long ago. I also heard the Muscle Shoals closed due to the owner not being willing to upgrade the store as Dairy Queen insisted he do. I don't know for sure either way but I do miss Dairy Queen and hate that there isn't one anywhere nearby any longer. They were actually pretty reasonable as well or at least I thought they were for what you got.

Although not as reasonable I also miss the mall's Baskin Robbins 31 flavors and between Baskin Robbins and Dairy Queen a lot of ice cream cakes were sold in the area.

Last customer turned off the lights. Owners were not "People" people. Looked down their nose at people. Thought their s*** didn't stink. No business to speak of. I mever went in the place day or night when there was more than a few people. Most of the chairs were stacked on the tables. Also a poor location. Got to show the folks some love, not contempt. MHO
Best DQ in the state is the one on the west side of I-65 south of Cullman. They give good service and do right by the food (burgers, fries, dogs, etc.) as well as the frozen stuff. The one in Lawrenceburg , Tennessee is also top notch--very generous with the size of their cones.

DQ is about the only place you still can get a dipped cone. Most others do not want the trouble of maintaining the melted chocolate and butterscotch coatings and have just stopped offering the dipped versions.

the dairy queen in russellville, was below par, to say the least. i know that can't live by ice cream alone, and their food was bad. we took a team there one time, it took forever, and the food was cold....all of it....it was also overcooked.....no wonder they closed....

I agree. I ate there only twice and ended up throwing the food away after a bite or two both times. It was cold and soggy and tasteless.

Not everything. Just enough to amaze and astound the likes of you, since you seem to know so very little!

Renaissance types such as I often feel compelled to share ourselves with a broad segment of our admiring public, even determinedly obnoxious persons such as you. I do happen to have an extensive background in the appreciation of the particular type of frozen, sweetened ice milk that is the basic commodity of Dairy Queens and similar establishments.

Any other way I can help enlighten you?

Thanks for that information. I will add the Frosty Inn to my list of dippers!
We've got a DQ within walking distance of our house. In warm weather we'll sometimes walk the dog down there and sit on the patio to eat. It's always clean, service is great, and it stays busy.

I'm sure that someone will franchise some new DQ's in the area now that the old ones are gone. Hopefully, yall will get some like the one near me.

I still miss Doug Black's chili dogs in the Sheffield DQ.

If I recall correctly, that business was not a Dairy Queen franchise, at least not in the last several years of its operation. It was called "Dairy King." It has long been boarded up and abandoned. The place was sold in the 1980s and the sales price was said to have included a substantial premium owing to the sale of the sole rights to the recipe for the chili dog sauce. Those were indeed the very best chili dogs to be had anywhere.

I have long heard the high praise for chili dogs served by the Varsity in Atlanta. I have eaten the Varsity chili dogs and, although they are pretty good, they are nowhere near as good as the Doug Black version.

It is a shame that the place closed. I have to wonder whether that recipe is being used anywhere else on this continent. If it is, I will plan to go there one day and pig out.
Originally, it was a DQ, but was changed to a Dairy King later. Doug's recipe was used in both. Although, I believe the DQ version was slightly better.

I lived in Atlanta for years. And, yes, the Varsity chili dogs are good, but not as good as Doug's. Varsity's burgers and fries are pretty good, too. Its where Atlantan's get their daily requirement of grease. Big Grin

I looked into a DQ franchise but they are only offering a upscale version sort of like a Fridays etc. They will however sell just a ice cream franchise.
As far as the one in muscle shoals is concerned. I ate there regularly. The food went down hill quickly. The chicken was often nothing but burnt skin and gristle. The burgers were often burnt beyond being edible. The fries were often cold as hell. The only good food was the ice cream products. That's not enough to keep a business

The original plan was to open it back up after the avalon road project was completed. From what I understand, the owner didn't think it was worth it.
