"Unanswered Prayers"
by Garth Brooks

"Unanswered Prayers"

Just the other night at a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be

She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

"Convoy," doubtless the best anti establishment country song I know of. It is also the earliest example of Rap music I know of.
Red Sovine did some presentations that may have laid the foundation for Rap, but "Convoy" set the mold. Spoken word, rythmic back beat, sung choruses, and a MESSAGE.
I have many favorite songs.. Most of which I like to sing. Big Grin

But for our wedding reception, my husband's song to me was "Keeper of the Stars" by Tracy Bird... And mine (I sang it to him while dancing) was "When you say Nothing at all" the Allison Kraus version. Big Grin

Other that are my favorites just to name a few:

"Fancy"-Reba McEntire
"Concrete Angel"-Martina McBride
"Bye, Bye"- Jo Dee Messina
"Til each tear becomes a rose"-Keith Whitley & Lorrie Morgan <-- I especially love singing that one. Big Grin

Just to name a few off the top of my head.

I also like a lot of Patsy Cline, The Judds, Faith Hill, Garth Brooks, and Lonestar. Smiler

"Keeper of the Stars" was played at my wedding as we both felt the words were appropriate. 'Someone' definitely had a hand in our first meeting and the seven happy years we have shared despite hurricane Katrina, forced moves, heart attacks and the recent death of my father. Without him in my life, I wouldn't be here at all.

"My Home's in Alabama" (not sure that was the title but ya'll know which one I mean) was a favorite when the AF stationed me far from home.

"Christmas in Dixie" is a MUST for the holiday season.

"Always on my Mind" in honor of my late, Willie Nelson look a like husband.

bluesman,
you have just done one of the kindest thing I have seen done in a long long time. Even though it was for people I don't know, except through this forum, I want you to know it made me feel especially good to have met you as well as them
Can we call "Folsom Prison Blues" (Johnny Cash) country? Just for fun? Let's not forget "A Boy Called Sue" and, by all means, "Ring of Fire" while we're at it.

Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through The Night"

Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"

Alabama's "Old Flame"

Hank Williams, Jr.'s "There's a Tear in My Beer" (sometimes, you just have to embrace that song, like it or not) and "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)"

"Waiting for a Train" - There are so many covers of this, though I'm partial to the Man in Black.

Oh! Thinking of Willie Nelson, how did I forget "On the Road Again"? Then, let's add to my list "Devil Went Down to Georgia"!

You know, I don't even really *like* country music in general, but there's good music in any genre. I suppose my tastes just run more "old school" than what most country stations play. Give me some Willie Nelson, The Possum, Dolly ("9 to 5"!), Kristofferson, Waylon, Hank, etc., but keep the newer stuff. I know that many of you like those new country folks, and it's all a matter of preference, but the classics carry the genre for those of us who don't think of ourselves as country music fans.

Okay, now that I've gotten all that out, I'll just settle on my favorite country song TODAY:

"Eastbound and Down" by Jerry Reed, from the Smokey & the Bandit movie.

You know the one...
"Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin'

Ah we gonna do what they say can't be done

We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there

I'm eastbound, just watch old Bandit run!"

Thanks for a good thread. Ain't nothing like starting your Sunday morning off with a little Jerry Reed.
Ha, I knew someone would answer, "Fancy." I hate that song with a blue passion. A hooker never got anything more than VD and shame, much less a mansion. heh

But to add my favorite, I love Boot Scootin' Boogie, ever since I was about 10. Or anything by Sawyer Brown. I haven't listened to country music on purpose in ten years, I guess. Well, with the exception of watching Nashville Star.
Allison Kraus... When you say nothing at all

Anything Alan Jackson

Anything by AlabamA

Anything by Carrie Underwood, especially her new one!

I like the newer country as well... it is more upbeat and some even has a POP sound... can be played on almost every type station...

I love COUNTRY MUSIC!!! I am a HUGE fan!!!!
