When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping

Consumer spending drives the American economy and is the force behind such buoyant statistics as the surprisingly strong 3.6 percent growth rate in GDP during the last quarter. But there’s early evidence the consumer might be doing too good a job driving the economy.

Old news, PBA. But here's my 2cents:
The government does set a very bad example by blowing the budget year after year with the current admin(any Rep for that matter). Then you have the latest generation with the entitlement syndrome...gotta have it NOW...more, more, more.... gimme gimme.....everything revolves around me!

My wife and I are debt free (except the house) and save as much we can;yet, she has a sister two years her junior that spends everything they've got on the latest and greatest. Of course, they live in a big fancy neighborhood in a big city where everyone seems to drive the newest and most expensive cars. I think it was Dave Ramsey that said, "Don't keep up with the Joneses because they are broke". Different strokes for different folks, I guess. But it doesn't make sense to me why so many people live paycheck to paycheck....It's called planning for the future...... more people should. Failing to plan is Planning to fail.

Does anyone recall that SNL skit where the "financial guru" had the book called,"Don't Buy Things You Cannot Afford" -------classic Big Grin. It's just common sense anyway....but, even that's getting rarer everyday. BTW, anyone who hasn't read Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover", I highly recommend it. Thanks, PBA, for offering a good topic of discussion. But, what's your opinion on the matter??

I do agree with you 100%, you said it very well! Yes, there is lots of things we would like to have, but its good not to have all the worry, what happens if I get sick or lose my job. So many are working 2+3 jobs to beable to keep up with the Jones's. I think trying to save and put money in the bank is good, the interest just don't pay very well.

Reagan,Bush,Clinton, and Bush has got us in a big mess. just go back into that time and you will see what I'am talking about.

double digit inflation came from Nixon and passed to Carter.

Iran Hostage crisis got Reagan Elected with alittle help from his friends. Alot more to the Iran Hostage crisis then people know and it has started to link out,do a search and read about it.

Double digit inflation maxed out under Carter, and he did virtually nothing effective to control it.

There's always "a lot more than people know" to any instance you can name. I remember the hostage crisis, and how ineffective Carter was in getting the hostages released. Way too much "peaceful resolution" was preached.
UMMM folks,
Old man here, EISENHOWER had the problem of holding an economy together. Roosevelt had the problem of recovering from a Depression. Wahington had a problem with Stemming RUNAWAY inflaton. Jefferson Closed the First federal reserve bank, because it had solved the crisis.
Woodrow Wilson had similar problems, and the CONSERVATIVES OF HIS DAY DISLIKED HIS SOLUTION AS MUCH AS THE CONSERVATIVES OF TODAY.
In his first term he kept the us neutral in WW I. In his second he asked and got a Declaration of War on Germany.
Before April 2, 1917, this is what Wilson got for us:
" Wilson maneuvered through Congress three major pieces of legislation. The first was a lower tariff, the Underwood Act; attached to the measure was a graduated Federal income tax. The passage of the Federal Reserve Act provided the Nation with the more elastic money supply it badly needed. In 1914 antitrust legislation established a Federal Trade Commission to prohibit unfair business practices.

Another burst of legislation followed in 1916. One new law prohibited child labor; another limited railroad workers to an eight-hour day. By virtue of this legislation and the slogan "he kept us out of war," Wilson narrowly won re-election." Official white house biography. http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/ww28.html
Wilson is one of the DEFINING DEMOCRATS. He was a Virginian by birth, and was in the Confederacy as a child, during the Civil War.
