Old and young alike in these parts remember the "big" snows in their life. We haven't had one in quite some time.
What are some local snow stories you can remember?

Was is '93 when the ice storm hit in the middle of the day and it took hours for some to get home?

I remember as a kid seeing snow flakes as big as half dollars (that's a coin bigger than a quarter for you kids.)

FEB 1985: almost 1 foot or more of ICE....out of skrool for 2 weeks....

JAN 1988: nearly 10 inches of snow...out of skrool for 1 week....

Those are the big ones I remember.

MAR 1993, while a Junior at Auburn, we got 4 inches of snow at Auburn, which is unheard of. About 100 miles up in Anniston, they got a blizzard and it snow nearly 2 feel if I remember correctly. It was gone within a week, but I went up to FT McClellan during spring break, and many trees were down (we were at the fort for ROTC training...).
The one in '93 was in an unheard of April. It hit during the day on a Friday and I got stuck at Brown's Ferry for the weekend. Great overtime! Two double shifts and a double time Sunday!

I believe '85 was a Friday also. It hit at night when I was working at Domino's in Muscle Shoals. Nothing forecast but the ice came down so fast the roads were treacherous within minutes and I was supposed to leave for Pensacola the next day. Decided to try it that night instead and almost got stuck in the middle of 157 with trucks using only one lane. Thought I was going to get run over trying to turn around to come back. I finally made it about a week later and Pensacola still had a little ice there. I think '96 was the last good one I remember. We took some car hoods over to the school on the hill off Frankfort Road in Tuscumbia. That was a blast!

I think it was the winter of 94. my son was a few weeks old and we had a house full of relatives b/c we had a gas stove and fireplace! wasn't that the same storm that hurt Miss UNA?

That one was all ice. I was working a project at Reynolds and they had to let us leave early. Took forever to get home in Florence. If I didn't know my way around the alleys I wouldn't have made it.
That big ice storm was a learning experience.... Fence lines down and horses getting out. Limbs breaking and falling and the scary crackle and pop sound of a tree preparing to crash to the ground in the middle of the night when you had no way of knowing which way that sucker was headed.
No power for 2 weeks, doing all the cooking on the wood heater and using candles and kerosene lamps.
Other than the danger part of falling trees i loved it. Great reading weather.
Ever notice that ice and sleet falling sounds like bacon frying?
I hate freezing rain. I was living In Leoma Tn. about 4 miles off 43, you could see shoal creek from the deck. There was a big hollow that ended right at the house. It sounded like we were in the middle if a war with all the sounds of trees crashing echoing down that hollow. I hope I never smell kerosene again, over 2 weeks with no electricity. It was a nightmare.

I was just a year old then so I don't remember it but I have seen pics. I do remember knee deep at some point but I was just a little feller then to so it was probably only about half that.

I don't believe its global warming but simply a cycle. I don't like cold weather but it would be nice to have some heavy snow with the cold we get. Hopefully we will get it soon to kill off some of the moles and keep the skeeters from coming out in December and March.

I hope and pray you are right about the cycle and what we have is not global warming, but I am afraid you may be wrong. If you are wrong, don't worry- Mother Earth will be ok. After humans have killed themself off, the earth will normalize itself in a few million years.
I have children 7,8, and 13. They have never seen a measurable snow fall that they can remember. Last year we went to Davey Crockett sate park so they could play in the snow. The snow seems to stop at the Tennessee state line. I doubt it makes it that far south now.

I agree with you, The world is a living organism
and as living organisms do they try to recover and survive disease. Humans have become a disease and Mother Earth is going to try and save herself.
we can never have a big snow here in the south again, its a matter of science, you know, global warming!!
now, all of you that blasted me for having the guts to come out and say in a public forum that i was dead set against an interstate to connect my little slice of heaven to the urban sprawl they call Huntsville, sit back and bask in your fond memories while we drive our cars and continue to "turn up the heat".
