Question: If a White man was born in Africa and later becomes an American citizen, is he officially an African American? In fact, is he more of an African American than a Black person born in the United States? Well, this is the mindset that prompted Paulo Serodio, a former student at a New Jersey medical school to file a lawsuit, ABCNews.com reports. The 45-year-old native of Mozambique claims he was harassed and then suspended for identifying himself as a “White African American” during a cultural exercise at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. “I’m not exaggerating,” he said recently. “This has destroyed my life.” He is seeking reinstatement at the school, an undisclosed amount in medical damages and public acknowledgment that doctors and other employees at the Newark, N.J.-based school violated his rights. Serodio’s lawsuit argues that two years ago, during a cultural exercise in a clinical skills course taught by Dr. Kathy Ann Duncan, students were asked to define themselves for a discussion on culture and medicine. Serodio described himself as a “White African American,” according to ABCNews.com. When another student said he was offended because Serodio is White, he was told by his instructor to never define himself that way again. “It was offensive to others and to people of color for him to do so,” he says he was told by Duncan. “It’s crazy,” Serodio’s attorney, Gregg Zeff, told ABCNews.com. “Because that’s what he is.” Serodio, who was suspended from the school in 2007, said he has never had a problem defining himself as an African American before. “There are people of all races who are African,” Serodio said. School officials declined comment to ABCNews.com.

I long for the day when we are recognized as Human. I pray for the day that King's dream is realized

My skin is white my race is human
that charlize theron is an african american, they did a skit about it on sat nite live. she3 is more african american than spike lee! and not all black people are african american, there are the hatian americans, and various other island peoples americans as well. this is why i think the term african american is missused. i dont use it because how am i suppose to know if a black person is african or hatian, or from trindad? not that big a problem around here but back in south florida where 53 languages are spoken in the public school system you could be well on your way to offending someone. i wish we could go back to black, or colored, or for that matter there is nothing wrong with the term negro, i dont get offened when i am refered to as caucasian.

Have to agree with you to some extent. However to actually define one's culture correctly, certain terms should be applied. Such as white American, black American, mixed American, indian American and now I guess mexican American. Everyone is either white, black or brown skinned!

Why do we need to identify their culture?I'm simply an American.
Hence why they used to be called "Colored" -- it wasn't a racist term, but it was a description of their skin becasue some were darker skinned and some were lighter (at least that is my opinion I know what history tells us, but not all things were intended to be "racist")...Some politically correct moron decided to call Blacks/Colored African Americans when that is not an accurate account. I agree with others -- we are all Americans and we should all be good humans -- regardless of our skin color. The more we keep bringing up skin color the longer the "racism" continues...where will it end?

I think I just spit coke out of my nose onto the screen of my computer...You're too funny.

i guess I am about that color myself, my great great grandmother was a cherokee indian....LOL
Back seventy years ago, and not just in the SOUTH, the were called "colored" as a demarkation line to separate Negros from Caucasian.

Black perspective: "Now Let's see, you are all pink and red when you are born, green when you are sick, black and blue when you bruise, red when angry or embarassed, ashen when you die, and you have the nerve to call me colored..." Wink

Reminds me of the man visiting a strange city, found himself in a local watering hole frequented by homosexuals...he spots a good looking female at the bar and begins to make overtures. She quickly informs him that she is a Lesbian. Oh, what does a Lesbian do he asked and since his approach is polite, she proceeds to enlighten him...he suddely exclaims..."OMG..!!. I'm a Lesbian..." HU is woven into the language of life. It is the Sound of all sounds. It is the wind in the leaves, falling rain, thunder of jets, singing of birds, the awful rumble of a tornado. . . . Its sound is heard in laughter, weeping, the din of city traffic, ocean waves, and the quiet rippling of a mountain stream. And yet, the word HU is not God. It is a word people anywhere can use to address the Originator of Life.

—Harold Klemp

I agree! I always thought that human meant spiritual man.

Werther's are my fav. Are you as sweet as werthers? The only time one should worry about skin color is if they are attempting to select the right shade of makeup to wear.Shouldn't be a problem for MOST of you men.

So are you saying Repubs don't separate people by race and color? Funny because there is a billboard here in Jacksonville, FL and throughout FL sponsored by the National Black Republican Association, Republican Jewish Coalition, and the United Black Republican Coalition.

They do that themselves. It's a necessity for defacrat politicians to play to each INDIVIDUAL race. If say, Bobby Jindal is elected President in 2012, I doubt his wife would proclaim that, "For the first time in 8 years, she's proud to be an American." I think those groups are just trying to show minotities that there is nothing wrong with being Republican. If they've had rotten lives as defacrats, maybe they should consider trying something new.
