The customer service is excellent and the food selection is much better than anything around here. Don't make value judgements about it unless you have actually been there.

No more calls folks - we have a winner here! Good point.

I will drive Smiler ... I am not knocking it at all, just haven't been there. You guys make it sound too interesting for words though... lets goooooooooo Smiler
I also use a lot of hard-to find ingredients in my recipes. I have found that Sweet Basil carries a few of the spices I can't find around town. But Publix is where it's at. I also lived in Florida, and when I moved here, I was just so shocked at the lack of selection in the markets. Of course it'll get you through the week, but if you want more than a fried egg sandwich, you need to go out of town.

We went to the farmer's market on the TVA reservation and they have some GREAT, fresh vegetables.

I live in Madison and shop there, prefer it to Kroger's, although Kroger'ing is good to. I'd rather pay more at Publix than go to Wal Mart and put up with that crowd, crappy grocery store, and self check out bs. A few of the Huntsville Wal Marts are downright scary at night. Nothing like going in WM and having pallets blocking the aisles and no one to help.

You're kidding yourself if you think Florence needs another grocery store. If a Publix opened, something else would just have to close. Publix, at least the Madison one on 72, has free coffee when you go in and the deli makes sandwiches. Clean store, great bakery and selection overall.

If anyone hasn't checked out Fresh Market, it's worth a look. It's at the corner of Airport and Whitesburg, not the largest store (used to be Winn Dixie), but the atmosphere and variety is impressive. The meat/seafood section is ridiculous. They carry fish that's over $20/lb if you wanna splurge.

Now THAT is a nice idea, not doable, but a nice thought... if Publix opened up here then something else would have to close, and naturally I thought of Walmart, lol.

LOL...and you talked me right out of going in those few words. I'll just stick to Dollar General, Big Star, Aldi and our local Farmer's Market. Smiler I'm laughing at myself, btw; I'm as practical as the day is long.

If you are the type of person who will drive out of their way to save a nickel then yes Publix may not be for you, but the prices are comparable to what you'll get from Walmart, not to meantion it has a much better selection of normal products and their deli department absolutely destroys Wal-Mart. I kind of see it as similar to the Target vs. Wal-Mart issue. (most people in the area assume Target is higher. In reality they are roughly equal in price once you total it out)

http://tinyurl.com/2zaox4 A comparison of prices between the two.

Its nice to see that Publix may be making their way to the area, but one thing I know about them, and I'm sure they are doing the same there is that they like to design their own stores. I live in Atlanta and I can only recall once where they put a store in a existing place, and it was being remodeled. To top it off, they then moved it a mile down the road a few years later when another strip mall opened up. It shows their attention to detail, but I see it as an obstacle to them moving to the area, unless they build a store themselves outright. Then the problem becomes where to put it.

Wild Oats in Franklin, TN is worth a visit also. It's near the Cool Springs Mall

Till recently I lived 10 miles from this place... along with Publix right down the street, they are both sorely missed.

Wild Oats ground chuck will make a burger sooooo good, like you never thought possible. All there meats are free range and all natural, no antibiotics/hormones etc. These animals are allowed to grow naturally... and it's obvious when you taste the difference.

Yah, it's a lil more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion.

You are what you eat....

AMEN to that there jimbo, kinda like the lottery God forbid we pass it here in alabama. we want to just make all the other states richer. While we remain to stay poor.

How well does your local government serve you now? The tax you give them only gives the dogcatcher a raise. The problem is the desire to change rather than the economics.

Jimbo, people go out of town to those stores because the local stores are either unable or unwilling to stock those items that people desire. This is because the local merchants are not adapting with the times. Since more and more people find the Huntsville option easy to play, the smart merchants should try to adjust or become extinct. But that's the story of downtown Florence!

Great point Princess Lum. If I were the owner of Big Star or any other locally owned grocery store and I was reading this forum you'd see a new ad from me in the Sunday and Wednesday editions of the Times Daily. There would be a banner and a statement proclaiming: if we don't have it, we'll order it, just ask! and maybe even have a way for people to email their suggestions in or a drop box at the customer service desk.

I understand that Big Star, for example, cannot afford the investment to stock everything that a Publix in Huntsville stocks. But if there is a mass exodus of people driving from Florence to Huntsville for fresh mozzarella cheese or Hershey's Dutch cocoa or prosciutto ham or vegan dinner entrees - you bet your butt that I'd be trying my best to get those items and those people into my store. Wake up Shoals Area grocery store owners - your shoppers have discovered Publix! And Wild Oat will be opening at Bridge Street (Madison Pike @ Research Park) this Fall.
smartchick, sure if a Big Star ordered items like that they might sell a few and then the rest would expire and they would throw it away. They would lose big time. A business can't stock eevrything. Huntsville people have more money than people around here. If I owned a store in Huntsville, sure I would stock specialty items, but not around here.
This not quite about the Publix... but if you are a big food person. Try driving over to the Dekalb Farmers Market in Decatur, Ga. It is the most extaordinary markets I have ever seen. Anything you want for almost any type of cultural recipe. It is a cultural melting pot inside that building. There are fruits and veggies I had never heard of!

If we (the shoals) do not have a beach then we will go where there is one. If we dont have clubs we go to ATL, and so on and so on. The same with the Lottery, Grocery Stores, Shopping and entertainment. The Shoals has got to get with the program if they want the money that comes from it. I am not in the market to settle.
