WHO IS GRANNY D? (CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM):

GRANNY D (CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM):

{I first learned of the epic adventures of Granny D from Frontline (a PBS TV show). Her mind and body are sharp--her ideas about America and Bush, on target. She spoke out years before it was proven that Delay, Abramoff, and many others were so utterly corrupt, becauase she knew that the campaign finance system was funding criminals in office and hurting the nation. It would be a pity to ignore one so correct and hard working. . . So, I have to write about her exploits and speeches so that others can know about her and learn from her decades of wisdom. My comments are in these square brackets].

January 1, 1999, at the age of 89, anti-Bush activist, Granny D (Doris Haddock) of New Hampshire, walked 3,200 miles across the United States (up to 10 miles per day for 14 months) for campaign finance reform. She collapsed in the Arizona desert, required hospitalization, and later climbed the Appalachian mountains during a blizzard, and finally finished her walk, skiing 100 miles into Washington, D.C. accompanied by dozens of members of Congress). This gained the recognition necessary for Congress to craft campaign reform legislation.

According to the website above:

"With her husband, Jim, she helped stop the planned use of hydrogen bombs in Alaska in 1960, saving an Inuit fishing village at Point Hope." [Frontline showed that she took care of Jim in later years until his death].

"In 2003 and 2004, she embarked on a 23,000 mile tour of the "swing states," encouraging women and the residents of poor neighborhoods to register to vote. She walked through housing projects considered too dangerous to visit by many, and registering voters all along her way."

"1994, at the age of 94, when no Democrat would run against popular U.S Senator Judd Gregg in her home state of New Hampshire" "When the red state of presidential vote by a mere 9,000 votes, New Hampshire turned blue in 2004 her campaign was given a share of the credit." [I think that Clinton was the president from 1992 to 2000, so these must have been Bush policies which carried over into the Clinton Administration.]

"Her memoir is entitied, "Granny D: You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell" (Random House)"

Her often-quoted speech from Pecos, Texas on her long walk:

"Never be discouraged from being an activist because people tell you that you'll not succeed. You have already succeeded if you're out there representing truth or justice or compassion or fairness or love. You already have your victory because you have changed the world; you have changed the status quo by you; you have changed the chemistry of things, and changes will spread from you, will be easier to happen again in others because of you, because, believe it or not, you are the center of the world.

"There is a second thing you need to know about impossible causes and it is this: there are no impossible causes on this earth if they are good causes."

"We honor certain people in history not so much for what they did during their turbulent lives, but for what they inspire us to do after they are gone."
