Two accounts of the creation of Man (highlights mine).

From the Bible, Genesis 2:7:

"And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground..."

From Brigham Young, alleged "Prophet" of the Mormon Cult and successor to another false prophet, Joseph Smith, Jr.

"Supposing that Adam was formed actually out of clay, out of the same kind of material from which bricks are formed; that with this matter God made the pattern of a man, and breathed into it the breath of life, and left it there, in that state of supposed perfection, he would have been an adobie to this day. He would not have known anything.JD 2:6, Brigham Young, October 23, 1853
Some of you may doubt the truth of what I now say, and argue that the Lord could teach him. This is a mistake. The Lord could not have taught him in any other way than in the way in which He did teach him.You believe Adam was made of the dust of this earth. This I do not believe, though it is supposed that it is so written in the Bible; but it is not, to my understanding. You can write that information to the States, if you please − that I have publicly declared that I do not believe that portion of the Bible as the Christian world do. I never did, and I never want to. What is the reason I do not? Because I have come to understanding, and banished from my mind all the baby stories my mother taught me when I was a child."

So much for Brigham Young's respect for Holy Scripture.  He takes what he likes and rejects what he doesn't.  He is obviously not any kind of careful scholar, for he says, "You believe Adam was made of the dust of this earth. This I do not believe, though it is supposed that it is so written in the Bible; but it is not, to my understanding."  Had Brigham taken the trouble to open the Bible and read the first couple of chapters of Genesis, he would certainly not have concluded that "it [i.e. the account of Adam being formed from the dust of the earth] is not, to [his] understanding in  the Bible.

What a transparent poseur this man was.  That he commanded such a large following evidences just how mass delusion works!

I yam what I yam and that's all I yam--but it is enough!

I would love to hear it. Either here or in a PM, it's your call to make.

It's really quite simple.  We humans are creatures of the Earth, the home of DNA biology.  We, apparently alone, are capable of self-realization and abstraction, and that is our adaptive advantage.

We are animals like billions of others, only smarter.  Not smart enough, all too often, to realize that we are here for a finite time, individually, and for a limited time collectively.

How much better would be be if we realized that life is temporary and to be enjoyed and maximized while it lasts?  How many billions of people waste life in anticipation of a highly speculative afterlife?

How different would it be if more of us realized that consciousness resides in the brain, and that when the brain dies, the soul goes with it?

How lovely it would be if we all realized that the best of the human experience is to be enjoyed and passed along to future generations.  Art, science, philosophy, the numinous experience of the transcendental knowledge of our place in the Universe.

We are on the verge of greatness.  We only need to shed the retarding effects of superstition.

Bring it on.
