Isn't an EBT card not for food? Wasn't it called "Food Stamps" before it was an EBT? What part of a "Big Mac" is not food?
Doesn't Cap‘t D‘s, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. serve food?

I like "Big Macs". My little kids like a "Happy Meal" every once in a while.

Who decided that "Big Macs" aren't food? Some "Government Official"? Yeah, we all know what great decision makers the Government is in out personal lives.

What is wrong with getting a meal that is already cooked? A good, hot, “Big Mac”, large fries, and maybe an apple pie?
Doesn’t it just make economic sense?
I don’t have to take it home and cook it. Cooking food requires electricity. Since I have used McDonalds electricity to cook my meal, I have saved on my utility bill. By saving on my utility bill, that is less money I will need for my “Utility Assistance”.

Then, there are the people who work at fast food joints. Haven’t I contributed to their continued employment by purchasing my “hot meal”? Employed people pay taxes. Taxes go for such things as keeping roads in good shape. School supplies. Defense. Politicians “Retreats”.

Is it for my health that I can’t have a fast food meal on my EBT?
Let’s see here. I can purchase all of the “cold” cholesterol bombs I want to at the Supermarket. Processed liquid cheese that squirts out of a can. Those frozen “cardboard” pizzas with enough “fat” content to warm an Eskimo for a month. Little “White Sugar” donuts. Lard. Frozen “Mexican” dinners, yet I can’t get one of those tasty looking “Bucket-O-Fried Chicken” from the deli...because it is hot? That’s nothing but a difference in “temperature”???
Nope. Can’t be I’m not allowed to get a “Big Mac” for health reasons.

Is it “punishment”? Am I a “sub-citizen”? A “blight”?
If so, why? And to whom? Since when did Americans become so class conscious and so uncaring and unfeeling about their fellow man?
We’ve already hit “hard times”. It’s hard enough not having a job. Seeing the look in your little kids eyes when they get a cold “Lunchable” instead of a good, hot “Happy Meal”. And you can even pull the “toy” out of the “Happy Meal” and save it until Christmas...THUS having to ask for less from “Toys for Tots”.

To all those whining about paying taxes to feed other people, you are going to pay taxes...no matter what. The money either goes to feed people or it will go to something stupid like a projects that never get finished. Padding some politicians pocket. Sending a billion dollars worth of powdered milk to “Gonzmania” for some corrupt dictator to sell and fund his Swiss bank account. Alcohol and “entertainment” for Government parties. Just look at what’s spent on the “Presidential Inauguration Party”.
Would you be silent about this, and yet deny me a “Big Mac”?
I want a “Big Mac”!!!

I'd like to add that regardless if fast food restaurants take EBT or not, people are still gonna get the same amount of money on their foodstamps.

Most of the homeless are not obese so the food choices the Government declares of being bad choices are irrelevant, also why should it be another man's business for another man's food cravings, being homeless and out of work is hard enough in this short life. At least let them enjoy their something without hatred bickering complaining folks . How are they suppose to have hot meals? Throw out a raw steak on the ground and let it sun cook? Have some Mercy on these people, they don't need you standing around trying to make things harder than they already are. Give to them by paying taxes from your heart, at least you will be blessed and rewarded one day by God if you believe in him.

That’s about all I have to say on this issue...I have to prepare my potted meat and catsup omelet , and check out a “Dominos Pizza” box someone tossed in my yard last night. Maybe there’s a piece left...hope it’s pepperoni!

I thought you were kidding!!!! Food stamps are for food. They are not for food that is prepared for you and served to you. I think they must feel that you could probably do that for yourself. Not all food needs to be prepared in a modern kitchen and you don't have to eat potted meat from a can. You can come up with something better than that.

It is a program that offers assistance to people in need. You do not need the Big Mac. You need food.

I am not on food stamps and I do not go out to eat or go to fast food. I cannot afford it! I can stretch my dollar so much better at the grocery store than going to fast food.

And, before you label me as a person with hatred and bickering, I have been out of work plenty in these hard times and have had to really be creative to get by.

I hope you find employment soon and can get on with your life. Unfortunately you are not alone. By the way, Big Macs are probably not a good choice for your health anyway.
For years - when I was a teacher- and would (seldomly) go to a fast food place near my home, I would meet families whose children were on free lunch coming out with boxes of food. The children also related that they ate at ______ all the time. Ready cooked food should be a no-no. On the other hand EBT should allow laundry soap. I do not care to contribute to those who eat out. I can afford it and I very seldom do! Well, maybe the catfish at Catfish haven! LOL!
A few points:
1. "Food Stamps" are not meant to provide anyone with all of their food needs. It is a supplement program.
2. Which brings point number two: it is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
3. You can legally buy a Big Mac with your EBT card. You can legally buy all items intended for human consumption except alcoholic beverages and imported foods. The reason why you can not (as apposed to may not) is that McDonald's is not authorized to accept your government benefits. To be eligible an establishment must sell a certain amount of staple food items.

And now for my personal opinion - I don't think you should be able to buy any sort of processed or convenience foods with food stamps. This would include frozen dinners, coke, kool-aide, Hamburger Helper, chocolate milk, and any other food item that is not deemed healthy and nutritious. By whom? The government of course. The same people who decide what you can buy with WIC. It is absurd that our tax dollars can be used by someone to buy Twinkies and Cokes.

New York is on the right track by attempting to ban sodas: New York Asks to Bar Use of Food Stamps to Buy Sodas
I stand corrected, thanks FD. It appears they updated the rules since I was a recipient. I'm glad to see it, too! I was very judicious with my benefits. I had a 4-year old at the time, was going to school full-time and working as much as I could. Here I was stocking up on canned goods, rice, peanut butter, and healthy foods with a long shelf life. Then I'd see people buying the worst junk foods with their benefits and it made me sick. People too lazy to work, and apparently, too lazy to fix their kids a decent meal. I overheard a child ask his mother "can I have a Snickers and a Dr Pepper?". She replied "no baby, it's lunch time, get you some chips and a Orange coke or NuGrape". You can't fix stupid.

EBT should be eliminated. Commodity distribution would be much more efficient at providing the basic nutrition needed to remain healthy. In my opinion EBT is one of the most abused government programs in existence.

great idea!!!

i hear people i work with talk about their friends who get food stamps and lets their friends 'borrow' the card to go shopping and will pay the card owner 50 cents on the dollar for what they use. the owner of the card uses the money to buy drugs, cigs and beer. they talk about how most everybody does it.

EBT/Food Stamps is a more practical way to go then distribution. While distribution may work here where there is a church fulla folks trying to buy their way into heaven on every corner-everywhere else it ain't like that. Easier and more cost-effective just to transfer numbers.
I say go after the abusers more aggressively.
There'll always be a "black (as in clandestine) market."
Old Commodities before food stamps: dried eggs, rice, cheese, butter, peanut butter. This was not a way to help the needy. This was a way for the goverment to subsidize the farmers. If you think the school lunch program is about hungry children, you are wrong! BTW, the powdered eggs were usually thrown away because the rcipients had no idea how to use them. They also could make you ill if not prepared correctly. EBT cards, used correctly, are the most efficient and people helping way.

But I sure did like that commodity cheese Smiler

In answer to the initial question "why you can't get a Big Mack with the EBT card, it is probably because that card is suppose to be used to buy food, and a person will have a long hard time convincing me and probably a lot of people that a Big Mack is actually food. Razzer

ADDED: according to the ABC board, here are some other things NOT food:
>Chicken tenders
>Nachos
> Casa dias
>Burgers, fries, hotdogs,
>Chicken wings
Probably a lot of other things I can't think of rignt now.

In it's prior form it may have been more of a farmer's assistance program than a health program. That was then this is now. A family's food needs can be evaluated and a healthy nutritional commodity program can be set up.

I seem to remember them selling hotdogs every so often when I was a kid. My understanding is that every few years they do, but it's just not a big seller. McD's is all about hamburgers. In fact the old style signs used to say "McDonalds Hamburgers-(howevermanybillion sold. nOW IT SAYS "Billions and billions sold") I remember when the number was ten thousand something.
