During the past 24 hours there has been three national publized incidents of violence in a public setting with two of the three at a church and one in a shoping mall. During these incidents, 3 non-offenders were killed.

My parents asked me why I always carry a handgun with extra ammo with me. I tell them, it's like a preventive insuance. I never leave home without it.

I first off want to say I don't carry...its a personal choice. But I do believe that is more law abiding citizens would carry a handgun in public there would be less violent crimes committed. The criminals know now that there chances of finding someone that is carrying a handgun is slim, so they know there chances of successfully committing a crime is high.

I know there are alot of people out there that wants to outlaw private ownership of guns because they are dangerous.....Guns don't kill, its the people that kills. Years ago there was this town in Ga that passed a law that every home must own a gun. Home break-ins while someone was home dropped to Zero. This is because the crooks knew they had a chance of getting shot if they broke into that house. It as later determine that that law was unconstitutional and the home break-ins started back.

Why is it that people fear guns?
I got my permit last week, I wasn't planning to be a pistol packing mama but, signed up for a class a the florence police dept for firearm safety for women and needed it. My husband decided I needed a gun with the increase in home burgalries and invasions and with him working a swing shift (you never know if he's coming or going LOL0) I don't plan on caring it around its a little big for my purse, he bought me a glock for christmas last year and I was afraid of it but, since I've been practicing I'm a whole more confident, (I can nail a milk jug at 25 yards LOL)then he goes and buys me a XP Springfiel? 40 just to make sure I don't miss, I don't plan on toting it but lord help the person that breaks in on me, If the German Shepard don't get ya I will
Schnauzer-People are afraid of guns because they are not educated on them, IMHO.

Also, I believe you should not carry a weapon of any kind unless you are prepared to use it if you have to. Personally, I plan on educating myself and getting familiar with using a gun very soon. I believe more women need to learn protection and defense skills these days anyway.
My employment allows me to carry as long as I can show that I am familiar with the weapon and proficient with it by qualifying with it at least 3-4 times per year under the guidance of a range master. Last week, I shot 100 % on the combat range. I also repeatedly hit bowling pin size targets at 25 yards free handed which for me is a feat in itself considered how far I have come since I started shooting.

I do not wish to engage in a situation where I am forced to use it, but I am comfortable knowing that I have the skills and ability to do so if needed. I work in some really strange and potentially environments at times and the potential for me to have a violent encounter is always there.
deco2: I think it's great that you are being educated in gun safety. This is very important and a lot of people never take the time to learn about safety issues. I've had a permit for well over 25 years and I make sure I renew it. But like Bella said, be sure you are prepared to use it. Another human being does not usually just stand there and let you shoot them. They may even shoot back. Good luck on your classes. I've found that another good way to practice is to drop a pretty small balloon into the creek and get it while it's moving.
