If it was an older guy I pretty much know why.

Us single-track guys ride close to the center line sometimes because that's where the cars' wheels track-less chance of hitting debris there (the chances are better that any debris will be on the offside) and we can avoid the oily strip in the middle of the lane. It also positions us so that the cage pilot ahead of us can see us in his left side mirror AND his center rearview. Most folks don't ever bother with the right rearview and it's convex nowadays anyway. Objects in mirror are f*&%ed up so bad ya can't tell what they are.   It helps on certain decreasing-radius curve approaches, too. Ya can hit the curve hotter depending on where yer starting position is. Gives ya room to drift some without slowing too much.

An older guy on a trike is either on his first ride in decades and hasn't figured out that he has to center himself in the lane yet or he's just doing all he can to keep it going straight. Trikes are a whole different critter compared to bikes.

Chances are it was the former.

I'm slowly getting weary of waging war with the crazies on the ground the last 30 years.  If I have to scratch-build it myself from old bicycle frames and a VW engine-My next bike is gonna be one of these:

Then I don't hafta worry about lines too much anymore.
