I have read the articles written about officer Young and what the paper and other sources are reporting that happenend. For the most part they are correct but not completely. I watched the wreck happen and I feel like I need to fill in some missing but very important details. I was sitting in the left hand lane facing north on wood ave. I was waiting for traffic to pass to turn into the seven points shopping center. I heard before I saw a little black car race past me in the right hand lane heading north, also. As usual traffic was pretty active on Wood Ave so my first thought was "Idiot". About a couple of seconds later a second black car (these were Honda Civic or Ford Focus hatchback style cars w/ loud mufflers - think Fast and Furious type) passed in the right hand lane following the first car. They were switching lanes at high speeds moving around cars that were in their paths. Again, I thought where is a cop when you need one. At that very moment, Officer Young also passed me in the right hand lane and was obviously in pursuit. He had his lights on and was traveling at an accelerated speed. Traffic coming South cleared and so I pulled in the parking lot closest to the road of the Seven Points Shopping Center. I was hoping to see him catching one of those drivers. Instead I found myself witnessing the most horrifing scene that will forever be in my memory. A gold colored SUV, now we know to be Mrs. Mackey, pulled onto Wood Ave from the pharmacy. Unfortunately she pulled between the speeding cars and Officer Young. I felt like I was watching a movie in slow motion. He had no time to break or even swerve. It appeared from my vantage point that he struck the SUV in the drivers side rear quarter panel and was thrown from the bike. The bike immediately burst into flames and cosequently so did the SUV. I'm writing this because I hope somebody who knows the drivers of the two black cars will tell them that while they did not personally take the life of this officer and forever impact the life of Mrs. Mackey and her family, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE!!! I realize they may have just been having some fun and never intended for something like this to happen, but fun when its irresponsible ALWAYS has consequences.

Thank you, Andrea, for sharing that. I hope that this gets reported by Times Daily as this is the responsible thing for them to do. It might help if you contacted them by email or phone directly with what you witnessed so that they can do just that. I do not know the officer or Mrs. Mackey, but for her sake especially, this was important for you to share.

God bless the families of all those involved & thank you, Officer Young, for, by all accounts, a job well done.
Thank you for posting your first hand eye-witness account. It was heart wrenching to read, but I hope something positive will come from it. So many times people (especially teens) drive as if they are in a bubble and their actions do not affect others. You have drawn a very clear picture of how that is just not true.

I did give the police a witness report at the scene. Hopefully, if enough people know about the racing cars they will be noticed. Officer Young was several seconds behind the two cars but I've wondered if he had time to call in the tags before the accident.

I hope he did.
You know what?? Things like this happen all over the place ALL THE TIME. ( the two cars racing). How tragic that stupid, stupid arrogant people wind up taking the lives of good people.

I drive down Hwy 157 (like you are coming from Moulton) every day. I then take Woodward, Avalon, Cox Blvd (curvy road by the old Lowes) then Jackson Hwy,(drop off a passenger)then Hatch and back down Woodward to go to work.

Most days I don't even feel like I am driving as much as I am DODGING the idiot, aggressive drivers.

You know the type. They think they are excellent drivers and that everyone else needs to learn how to drive. They are in and out of traffic, cutting people off and turning with little or no warning.

They think since they "do this every day" and "drive this road every day" that it is ok for them to drive like absolute and total IDIOTS.

The only reason these fools are still ALIVE is because of responsible drivers that have the experience and know how to DODGE THEM. The responsible dirvers that are watching everyone and paying attention to what the other cars are doing are the ones who SAVE these idiots.

My daughter starts to drive in June. I AM TERRIFIED FOR HER SAFETY!!! She does not have the experience to stay out of these people's way, or dodge them or recover when they push her out of her lane.

I know I have gone on a tirade but I am SO SICK of trying to make my way around and can't relax and enjoy a nice ride in the country even ( on the county road I live on) because some dumb*ss who "drives that road every day" thinks they are exempt from any and all traffic laws and can drive on the wrong side of the road, pass a STOPPED SCHOOL BUS....just whatever.....

What can be done?? Somebody.....please.....calling in a tag does no good... are we all left to having to depend on the planets being lined up just right...left to depend on it being our lucky day that we are not going to die today because of some idiot????

Please, I beg of you to please go to Florence Police Dept. tell them what you witnessed. That's my Brothers girlfriend , her sister & her mother that was in the SUV. They are family to me and my family. My brother & her were once married. Please let them know what you seen. If it wasn't for people like you (around to see this happen) People helped them get out of the SUV.The mackey family would have died due to smoke and/or explosion. My thoughts & prayers go out to both families.
The best thing for Ms. Pate to do is to call the police and give them the report not the Times Daily.
As for the Swindlemaster 2007, as usual you are the perfect example of a Christian. NOT! You are always so worried about others being judgemental and here you are making comments like that about the Police Department at their lowest point. May God have mercy on you.

I would like to send my sincere sympathy to the family of David Young, his church family, friends and his fellow workers at the City of Florence.
I did not know David but there is a lot to be said for someone that lives their life in service to their Lord and hometown.
May God Bless you all.

I think you need to read swindles post again, he was talking about the ones being chased, not the FPD.
Thank you OriginalBama for clarifying that for me! I was wondering what bygodslove had read into SwindleMaster's post. I agree with you, I am quite certain that his remark was meant for the drivers of the black cars that contributed to the accident.

bygodslove we all understand that this is a very painful and emotional time. Everyone is trying to come to terms with this horrible event and it is easy to get caught up in the big picture and miss the small, important details.
Unfortuantly the drivers will probably nevber be found or held accountable. If David didn't call in their tag numbers then that limts the chance even further. After all, how many small black cars are registered in the Shoals area. Not to mention the fact that one or both of the cars could have been from TN. or MS. Even if David did call in the tag number(s) then all the drivers would have to do is deny they did anything wrong then it would be their word against the witness who posted on this forum. It would be a hard case to prosecute, especially for the "prosecutor" the city currently employs.

The driver(s) of the car(s) Davis was after will have to be tried by their own consciense (spelling?)

I take from your post that you don't care for our "prosecutor" at this point. This whole situation is bad enough, please don't turn this thread into a bashing of the prosecutor's office. I'm sure that FPD and the DA's office are doing everything they can with all of the resources and information that is availbable to see that justice is served for tragedy that cost David his life.

Thank you for the one that witnessed the situation for sharing your info with the FPD and us. It should teach us all to be more observant in our every day lives -- you never know if what you are watching may be vital to help in the future.
I'm not bashing the DA's office at all. The DA's office doesn't prosecute traffic cases for the city of Florence. For the record, the DA's office is doing an outstading job for Lauderdale COunty. We would all like to know who was driving those cars and set this tragedy in motion but it will be a daunting task. My apologies if I offended anyone associated with the city municipal court.
I, along with all of Florence are glad and thankful that there was a witness to this accident, so that all accurate information is given to the proper authorities. Thank you for being there, I am sorry you had to see that awful accident. We need to remember David's family, both personal and FPD at this time and use this forum for sending kind messages to both. We all have our feelings about those cars, and what should be done as far as prosecution of the drivers. I usually do not pipe in , but feel sometimes during times of shock and grief, things get said that do not come out the way others may read them. I do not think anyone would purposely say anything here in disrespect. Thanks from a friend for all the sweet things that have been said. I know first hand how kind David could be. Our daughter was diagnosed with cancer in Sept 2006, and David on several occasions offered to help us in any way he could. That is the kind of man he was. He will be greatly missed. We all have a new "Smiling Angel"to watch over us. God Bless the Young family.

is it not possible that as david was coming down the hill, at pursuit speed, that she probably did look, and pulled out after seeing it was clear, and then the motorcycle appeared when it was too late? I'm not saying she was not at fault for something, but put yourself in her shoes. if you were caught up in something like this, and it was an innocent accident on your part, would you want to be charged with manslaughter? or would you want the benefit of the doubt. david was a friend of mine, and I don't think he would want this ladys life ruined over this. but if you ever slip up, I hope someone is standing close and suggest that you be punished to the fullest extent of the law!
There is a reason that these things are often called ACCIDENTS! Do you not think that maybe this family already feels terrible, without insensitive people like you, making remarks like these. I for one am VERY thankful that I am not in her shoes. I knew this family years ago and I can tell you that they are Christian people as well as Mr. Young was. They are decent and caring. The only way that you could have a clue about what happened there, or what her responsibility should be, would be for it to have been YOU! Even tho you sound cold and uncaring, I don't wish that on you. My prayers are for both families. I hope that the investigations find that it was just a matter of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. It there is any fault found, I am almost sure it would be in whoever was driving the cars that Officer Young was attempting to stop. Well...that and maybe people like you, who pass judgement on people without having all the facts.

Today is the funeral for David and we should all be thinking and praying for them to have peace and strength today knowing that David is in heaven smiling down.

I am sure that the PD & DA's office will be looking at this case and will file charges WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT--at this moment the city is still in shock at this terrible situation. They are most likely being considerate of the family and friends that are mourning the loss and would not add more insult to injury at this point.

As far as the two cars David was allegedly chasing -- I'm a firm believer in 'what goes around comes around' -- they will pay the price for causing this tragedy in some way or another whether they are ever caught or not. I take peace in that thought.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of David Young and the FPD.
People please chill out -- it has been less than 5 days since the accident and if I'm not mistaken, several people in Ms. Mackey's car were taken to the hospital. You have not given the FPD TIME to mourn and be ready to address the charges that most likely will be filed. I assure you she will be held accountable for her role in the accident and if they ever catch the "racers" they will be as well.

GIVE IT A FEW DAYS -- They performed an autopsy on Officer Young, it can take several weeks for all of those findings to come back and then the DA's office will have the information they need to file the charges that are relevant. Ya'll are trying to turn this into a bash the FPD and right now they need our SUPPORT!!!!! Please be patient. I know that is hard, but please give them a chance to mourn. If this were you -- wouldn't you want the same consideration...
it really saddened me to read about officer's young's passing..i am a florence native (lived there 22 years before moving to Russellville),and although i didn't know him, it sounded like he was a wonderful man. May God rest his soul, and bring peace to the FPD and to his family. They have all been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard about the accident.. It's so tragic to hear about something like this..
