Okay I'm curious.  Some folks enjoy getting out of town every now and again just to try different places.  I'm wondering if those on the forum might want to share those places you find are "worth the trip" to visit out of town.  Naturally being on the Food Forum I'm talking about places to dine and not the shopping stores.

As for myself when we go to Huntsville we like to try Cheddar's and then Big Bob Gibson's BBQ when in Decatur, Alabama as we love their Stuffed Baked Potatoes and Coconut Pies.  So curious what other places are good enough to entice you to make the drive?

I don't intend to drive to enjoy this item, but when I am in Chicago area, I always try to eat at a different Italian Beef restaurant. I am hungry for fresh Italian Beef Sandwich, right now.. I've been to so many, I have forgot many of their names. Seems they are all a little different, but similar and you tend to go back to the ones that WOWed you with the combination of flavors & texture. My Favorite places for Italian Beef's are Portillo's, Buona Beef & Al's to name a few. There are so many different places serving this sandwich everywhere you go in Chicago area. Strangely enough, I did find an Italian Beef Sandwich in all places..... Iuka, MS... Donna's Italian Beef Italian Restaurant on Constitution Drive. It was OK, I give it a 3.9 on scale of 5. Much better than I thought it would be. Worth a try when in Iuka,MS. I will tell you, its a tiny little place.

I loved Wintzell's Oyster House/Bar when I went and it was in Decatur, AL.  I don't know why it didn't make it there and was surprised when it closed.  I always thought that they had seafood that tasted like I would/could get at the gulf.  When I'm down Gulf S****s I also try and make it a point to go to Lambert's (home of the thrown rolls), but given the society we live in I wonder how much long that experience will be available.  I heard that someone was actually suing them for being hit by a roll.  I didn't though hear the outcome of the case.

As for the others who have posted so far thanks for the info I'll add many of those places and recommendations to my list.  As for the IHOP at Athens I found it to be much better than the one at Madison although my wife and I were the only patrons they had at 8:00 AM one morning and that was concerning.  Concerning not from a quality standard but that they will keep it open with that little business but then maybe they have more other days.

Agree Budsfarm.  I have never had a good experience there.  Of course, I went to the one in Huntsville, but it has always been subpar.  Some places that I really like in Huntsville are Mellow Mushroom, Jersey Mikes (sub shop), Anaheim Chili and Bandito Burritto.  Was also really underwhelmed by Cheddars.

There is a nice little cajun place in downtown Huntsville called Po Boy Factory.  There are also a lot of good little eateries around the Crestwood Hospital area, Bonefish Grill probably being my go-to.  The best food I have had in Huntsville was the Apollo Cafe, which unfortunately closed down.

When in Memphis area:

Can't beat Carrabba's Italian Grill , Never had anything bad at this location, every dish I had, was very good. 5110 Poplar Ave.

My 1st experience in Thai Food had seemed to be my best Thai experience. Went with a group and everyone found something New to try.. I went with a "safe choice",( Beef, Spicy garlic sauce, black & white peppers, carrots, mushrooms, on bed of shredded cabbage) As with all dishes you choose choice of Beef, Chicken, Pork, Veggys, Tofu or Shrimp as your Meat/Non-Meat Entree, then you choose their various methods of Thai preparation (Too many to mention here).   Good Food & Experience. Bhan Thai - 1324 Peabody Ave - Midtown Memphis. As some of our group found out, When they say "Hot", you better be able to handle it... It means HOT!

Love your posts, gbrk.  But we're going to have to agree to disagree about Wintzell's/Decatur.  You must have been there on a good day because their closing comes as no surprise to me.

Still waiting for "OH!  Bryan's" to rebuild in Mount Hope.  I keep hearing rumors.

I too have heard those rumors but to date that's all they are.  I didn't go to Wintzells that often in fact it wasn't more than a couple of times and honestly those times were good, at least for me.  I'm just glad I got lucky.  The main thing I remember about them was that the fish did taste similar to that I obtained when vacationing at the Gulf.

AS for the comments from the others about Thai and some of the other foods I can't even try due to a stomach that if I did entertain Thai food, given some of their common spices, I'd most likely end up in the Hospital so I just have to admire from afar and rely on others.
