I absolutely love a fresh made bagel, and there is no where in the Shaols to get one. My guess is the closest place is the new Panera bread in Decatur, though I have not been there so I am only guessing based on my previous experiences at Panera Bread.
Would the Shoals support a place like that? or is everyone just hung up on doughnuts and chicken biscuits?

Hillary in 2016?  Why not?  We've already had one "girly man" serving in office for the past 7 years, we might as well give her chance as well!

If I was investing in a business, it wouldn't be a bagel place in the Shoals. Too small an area for it to be very profitable, too northern for many, and too many "what's that?" I'd think. There aren't that many in the HSV area, a few Brueggers. Many coffee shops tend to sell them in the morning. Also Panera and Atlanta Bread Company.

Drive in expresso shop sounds good as long as the barristas were wearing bikinis. However, certain politicians might shut it down.

Do any of the shops sell good croissants, especially the au beurre (with butter) ones?
RE; your croissant question Are you stark raving mad? Walmart does have good(not fresh) real butter ones. They are pretty good(as better than none at all) if you can develop that precise oven heating touch. No microwave or toaster as you know! Paris and New Orleans fantasizing here - I did have a good one at Amy's Bread in NYC several weeeks ago!
It was interesting to me when I was in Chicago in one of the "hoods" several years ago to see the French pastries at the Vietamese bakeries. I had to do a little history recollection! There was an excellent small croissant shop in New Orleans until Katrina. I do not know if it survived or re-opened. I have not had the heart to go to New Orleans since K. BTW, the shop was small - not the croissants! I always had two anyway!
I was referring to some of the posts which i felt related to my question concerning your sanity! If you retired, came home, we could open a bagel, croissant, and Greek restaurant in Tuscumbia or maybe in the entertainment district in Sheffield! Seriously, you are probably aware of the large number of mixed ethnic locations in NYC. Oh, I forgot, we could also sell fresh Gulf seafood! And salads with arugula. I could go on forever! Do not try to parse this post - I am just talking on the keyboard! Spend your time walking along the Seine toward Notre Dame! Do you detect a note of sheer envy?
EM,

I did walk around the Seine and the Isle de France area. However, I'm back in north Virgina and finishing up my contract. I'm taking June off after working 16 months straight (dodging French labor laws).

Just a short trip to Detroit to catch up on a few techniques at TACOM.

Yes, I am well aware of the ethnic mix in NYC. Once was part of a minyan at a service in the Garment district, although not Jewish. The reb said he'd never heard kaddish in a southern accent before. Cool
Interventor, I actually was talking about the restaurants such as the Cuban and Chinese place sharing the same space on upper Broadway around 95th. I think you did comment that you were returning to the US, and I forgot it. My psitive thing for the day is that I will no longer have to sweat that commandment about covetness! The reb needs to visit Natchez - or Florence for that matter. How about leftover homemade matzoh ball soup and ham sandwiches for lunch? Light they were and like a feather!
