The Tuscumbia Police Department has become a training ground for those that want to become police officers over the past few years. They are sent to the acadamy, paid for by the city trained and sent back to work for the city. But if a job that pays more opens up in another city the leave Tuscumbia and go to that city and the process starts all over again.

Perhaps Tuscumbia PD...and others...should consider a 'requirement' that the officers THEY send to the academy STAY a minimum of 3-5 years at TPD. If they opt to pursue employment elsewhere, they must REPAY the city for the cost of their academy training. This is common practice among a lot of U.S. school systems, wherein teachers hired for 'critical needs' (Math, ESL, Spec. Edu., etc) areas have their student loans paid off in exchange for (usually) a guarantee of 5 years service with their respective system.

Good idea but I think I read that the academy was only a few thousand dollars. They could also raise the wages and only hire people who have been to the academy. I assume they will train anyone with the fee????? Or........They could stop sending people to the academy and just let them do on the job training.
You are correct DogSoldier, a person has to be hired by a LE Agency or a Corrections facility before they can go to the Academy. This is so that the necessary background checks and such are done before anyone gets the training. Some agencies make it a condition of employment that an officer be POST certified within a certain time frame. This is also true for the Federal academy in Georgia.
