"When Dana Weinstein talks about her second child, she refers to her "angel baby." In the summer of 2009, with a 2 1/2-year-old son and a daughter on the way, the Weinsteins were looking forward to completing their family. Then tragedy struck. After a sonogram 29 weeks into her pregnancy, Weinstein learned her daughter's brain hadn't formed properly and that the baby would face severe health and mental problems, if it survived at all. Several weeks later, she made the painful decision to end the pregnancy before "Baby W" was born. Now Weinstein fears that if Republican legislators around the country succeed in banning abortions after 20 weeks, many women in similar situations will no longer have the option that she did."

Jen,

Some tests are not without risk.  You don't take them unless there is a prevailing reason to do so,  Amniocentesis is one of those.  You risk damaging the baby but if a genetic tests indicates the need, it should be considered.

It could be that there was no activity from the baby causing a concern that resulted in the need for a test this late in the pregnancy.  I personally find it impossible to ponder the weight of the decision this mother felt she had to make.  I cannot imagine anyone second guessing this woman had to do but if the far right gets their way, that is exactly what will happen.  Is happening.

But the question remains: do you feel you have a right to make this decision for this mother?

I guess you've never read what i posted about abortions. I think this one woman waited very late to decide, but my opinion is if it's the baby's or mother's health then the parents and the doctors are the only ones to have a say. Killing a baby for convenience is the worst thing a person could do and I have a problem with those abortions, and the ones done late term. I did go read her story, and was struck by her saying she gave her baby a peaceful death. I'd argue that point. But anyway, if you read how those tests are given throughout a pregnancy it makes you wonder why they didn't catch it sooner, or why she waited until the baby was almost full term to abort it.

If it's no one's business she shouldn't be wanting to tell everybody. Motherjones 'nuff said.

This is a horrible decision that I would not want to make. Like Jennifer said though, couldn't it have been caught a lot earlier?

No, it very likely couldn't. What Uno said in response to this earlier was right on the money.

These are frightful, heart-wrenching and totally unenviable considerations and decisions (to test/not to test? possible consequences of each action? what are the odds of damage to the fetus if already healthy? what to do if there's a severe result?) that most prospective parents have to contend with daily given the modern testing options available.

Talking about a developing fetus.  Brain development may not show up on ultrasound earlier than that.

========================so crust?? The frontal lobe is not fully developed until adulthood.

The part of the brain that should warn its host of  second thoughts needed regarding certain behaviors.
