HR 1586 passed today 247-161. Every Alabama house member - except Congressman Artur Davis, who voted "yes" - agreed with Minority leader John Boehner that saving the jobs of teachers, police officers, and firefighters is "a payoff to union bosses and liberal special interests."
Should Alabama turn down the money? Would it shake up a few people if, say, 3,000 teachers were laid off in Alabama or a few nursing homes were shut down because Medicaid reduced their payment?

This is not a matter of turning down federal money. All states rely on federal money. However, the federal government is not in a position to give money. IT HAS NONE TO GIVE!!! The federal government is spending money like a drunken sailor. The only difference is that the sailor stops spending when he runs out.

I know that we would suffer some. However, the time to address was decades ago when we continued to grow the national debt. If we do not suffer now by losing teachers and nursing homes, then we will suffer in 20 years losing teachers and nursing homes.
It is a pay-off. No we will not turn it down. Yes, the Unions will swagger about and pay homage to the Obama administration and claim how they "saved" teacher's jobs, etc, and we will put the clowns back in office. Meanwhile, the US dollar is at its lowest point in 15 years, compared to the Japanese yen. This country is headed for a major depression, and Obama is at the reins driving us straight to hell. He may have taken the reins from GWB who was driving us there, but he certainly has not steered us from this highway, and the blame no longer can be placed elsewhere.

Of additional interest is the fact that the Dems shifted, or "stole", about half of the money to fund this project from the Food Stamp program....wonder how they will blame that on the Republicans.....LOL

The Obamanites will probably do as they did with the "borrowed" funds from Medicare for Obama Care. They will get the politically appointed trustees to issue a report to the lapdog MSM trumpeting the improvements to the Food Stamp program's solvency while that agency's bean-counters will submit a rebuttal to Fox News.

It might be different if they had money to give but they don't... So NO, Alabama should reject the money!

You obviously don't have kids in school.

Look people: We have "socialized" school systems. Alabama funds education at one of the lowest per-capita rates in the nation and we still do a pretty darn good job educating kids overall.

But the schools subsist 100% on taxpayer funds. Cut taxes and you cut teachers.

Yes, sadly, the freaking union (I sooo despise them!) gets to take some credit for "rescuing" teacher jobs but the fact of the matter is that we had to have the money and schools are thankful for avoiding laying off teachers.

We place far too little emphasis on education in this country and especially in Alabama - as evidenced by the posts here. You same people will be jumping up and down if the system starts to lay off hundreds of teachers and your poor little johnny comes home complaining that he can't learn because the class is too crowded.
