Nature Conservancy takes BP money, stirs debate 08:56 AM
Should environmental groups take money from oil, gas and coal companies? The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is raising difficult questions for several groups, especially the Nature Conservancy, which lists British Petroleum as one of its business partners.
The Nature Conservancy, which has given BP a seat on its International Leadership Council, has accepted nearly $10 million in cash and land contributions from BP and affiliated corporations over the years, reports The Washington Post. Some of its members are now questioning this relationship.
Conservation International, which has accepted $2 million in donations from BP over the years and partnered with the company on a number of projects, told the Post that it's reaassing its ties to the oil company in the wake of the massive Gulf spill.
Some environmental groups keep a distance from oil and gas companies posing, but others see partnering with them as the best way to ensure change.
"Anyone serious about doing conservation in this region must engage these companies, so they are not just part of the problem but so they can be part of the effort to restore this incredible ecosystem," Conservancy chief executive Mark Tercek wrote on his group's website after criticism from a Conservancy supporter, according to the Post story.
