Exceptin' Alice.

First a little background, on the late, great, officer Obie. http://www.arlo.net/obie.shtml
be sure to check the Norman Rockwell painting on the left.

Now, the full text of the Alice's Restaurant Massacre, http://www.arlo.net/resources/lyrics/alices.shtml

And Finally a personal invitation to join "the movement."

Arlo Guthrie, "And the only reason I'm
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both ***gots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and
all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the
guitar." ©1966,1967 (Renewed) by Appleseed Music Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Officer Obie showed up for the party, and was the special guest of honor.

It is my understanding that Officer Obie passed away in 1994. http://www.brainyhistory.com/events/1994/september_11_1994_170739.html
It's great to think that Obie was present for the 40th anniversary, in 2005, but he had passed away 11 years earlier.
The Obit I posted does not do him Justice, listing him as an actor. He was in reality the Chief of Police of Stockbridge, MA. He was also a model for several Saturday Evening Post Covers, and did play himself in the Movie, "Alice's Restaurant."
Thanks, you're right.

I must have been thinking of another occasion. He and Arlo became good friends. After all, Arlo made him a cult figure and all he was doing was his job.

Maybe I remember Arlo talking about him recently.

"We decided that one big pile was better than two little ones, and rather than bring that one up, we decided to throw ours down"

His father, Woody is credited with one of my favorite songs of all time, "This Land is Your Land."
It should have some kind of National Recognition. http://www.arlo.net/resources/lyrics/this-land.shtml

There was a church house here in Sheffield for sale a few years back. I tried to get the wife to agree to buy it and move in and live in the bell tower like Alice and Ray. She, of course, was not amused.
I lived a few blocks from a well known Pawn Shop in Phoenix. Before it was a pawn shop it was a place of worship. The stained glass and altar were removed, I suppose to demonstrate the tasteful use of God's Former house.
