Was there anyone else who felt a little slighted by the You Said It in the paper today from the "poor" people from Wisconsin who were led to believe that Alabama was a retirement heaven, only to find out we paid taxes on our food here? (I guess they have not discovered the food stamps yet, maybe we should let them in on that little secret as well).
The real ironic part of the whole diatribe by this person that strikes me the wrong way, is how they berate the state, talk about how bad their Medicaid coverage is, and then in another paragraph complains that they can't get DSL service for their "computers".
Well cover me with butter and throw me in the oven, but I wonder how many out there who actually would like to have a computer, and wouldn't mind having any kind of connection, and yet cannot even get Medicaid or any help with their medical services? nor any of that free dental care they are asking for?
You know if it is so darned good where you came from, why not go back? If this is the type of people we are getting, we should ask ourselves "can we not do btter"?
Sorry, but that is just my little rant in response to your little rant.... Mad

Hillary in 2016?  Why not?  We've already had one "girly man" serving in office for the past 7 years, we might as well give her chance as well!

I am furious over this article. It appears the couple has been on the Wisconsin dole for years and heard that the cost of living was lower in Alabama. They apparently did not do their homework concerning all the freebies they feel they are entitled to. I cannot imagine you would not check all tax situtions and balance then before making such a move. Was there a problem with the Medicaid qualification in WI? Is there family here? Why did they pick AL and where did they get the money to move? I could go on, but this is my immediate reaction.
If morons like the Wisconsin couple would live within their means AND save a large percentage of their income and invest some of it, they could retire anywhere they wanted to and be self sufficient.

I recommend starting with Dave Ramsey's plan. I am sure that there are more "sophisticated" ways of becoming self-sufficient. But he presents a basic, common sense plan that even these morons could follow.

I believe that Medicaid and Medicare should be used for those who truly need it--children who can't help themselves (or that they have crap for brains parents who should have been on birth control in the first place), mentally ill, elderly with no family/no income/desperate situation.

If you have hands, legs, arms, feet, eyes, and even half of a brain, pick up a shovel and get your *** to work.

Once you have saved up enough, then you can retire.

No offense, but I left Alabama for a reason. lol Smiler
And I do gripe about it. But I also did leave and I also know that it isn't THAT bad and miss parts of my life there. I really miss friends and family and most of all my childhood. Bottomline, I had to leave to find work.

I might have to retire in AL someday (only because of budgetary reasons or if a family member needed me to), but personally I am aiming for some place real nice like Hawaii or at least South Alabama (Gulf Shores). Smiler
I moved here from Wisconsin (I'm not the discussed couple!). Don't form your opinion of Wisconsinites from this couple. Most of us are better than that. By the way, I'll take my mild Wisconsin summers and winter sports and activities over your sweltering Alabama summers any day! Eeker

And yes, you haven't had cheese till you have had Wisconsin. All the cheese down here seems to have a bitter and chalky hint to it.

I agree the letter did not come across as anything but ungrateful and critical, but...

If a child is disabled, he gets Medicaid. If his father is Bill Gates, he still gets Medicaid. That's the law. I'm sure any of you would take it if you had a disabled child who required thousands of dollars in medical supplies a month.

I currently have four patients under the age of 21, all on Medicaid. No one can imagine how horrible it is to have a child who can't walk, usually can't talk, will never grow up and move away, will never give their parents grandchildren. To put it bluntly, will probably not live past their 30th birthdays.

If you don't like giving Medicaid to the these patients, write your senators and representatives.
This is from the SS Admin online:

Medicaid is a health care program for people with low incomes and limited resources. In most states, children who get SSI payments qualify for Medicaid. In many states, Medicaid comes automatically with SSI eligibility. In other states, you must sign up for it. And some children can get Medicaid coverage even if they do not qualify for SSI. Check with your local Social Security office, your state Medicaid agency, or your state or county social services office for more information.

Alabama is a state that automatically gives Medicaid to any disabled child, whether they qualify for SSI or not. I assume Wisconsin is also.

I know that one of my patients does not get SSI, I know one one does, and have no idea about the other two. To be a parent, sometimes a single parent, and have to provide the quality and quantity of care these children demand is impossible to imagine unless you've been there. Would I have done it on my own? I have no idea, but any parent of such a child may place him in a nursing home, and many do. Kudos to those who choose to keep their children at home where they're loved.
I work for a state funded home/school for mentally and physically disabled people. The ages are from 18-57 in Franklin County. All have medicaid. I do not care to pay taxes for these people to receive health care. What I have a problem with is Sally here who doesn't work, lives in public housing, receiving $400-500 in Food Stamps, has 6 kids 6 different daddies, and receiving medicaid. I am all for helping those in need but not helping lazy people that feel the world owes them something. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, work 40 or more hours a week, starting school in the fall(full-time), and don't receive ANY FINANCIAL assistant from the government. I do however receive a check from the state of Alabama every two weeks...my paycheck that I worked for!! Big Grin

I ain't kiddin!

I was a rant bordering on crazy.

If they can choose anywhere they want to live, why the hell are they still here?

A mind boggler!

For all its faults, I still just love this place. If you disagree you can kiss my grits.
Before I get flamed. My rant against their "rant" was not directed at the fact they are getting Medicaid. I certainly do not mind tax dollars going to take care of a child, especially one who has a disability. My angst is against one who accepts this and then will complain that it is not enough while in the same breath talking about the inconvenience of not being able to have high speed internet services for their computers.,,,, Mad

I had an uncle who was crippled by a falling car in the 1950's, severing his spinal cord and making him a paraplegic from the waist down and confining him to a wheelchair. He was sent to a trade school where he was taught watch repair. By the late 70's he was out of a job when cheap Chinese digital watch started showing up, and nobody needed them to fix their watches any more. The State however wouuld not give him Medicaid because he had been taught a trade and given up his rights to help by accepting their "generous" gift in the early 60's. I never heard him complain about having to purchase his own wheelchair, and I certainly never heard him complain about not having access to high speed internet, or a full dental coverage.
I know life's not fair, but dayumm dude, if you don't like it here, and you know someplace better, don't complain, just move to wherever you think is better. It makes you look ungrateful.
