For the most part, I can look at a piece of meat and tell you if it's gonna be any good or not and smell a jug of milk to decide whether or not to drink it. I think we'll be fine without the USDA inspectors doing that for us
It has been stated and reported by most media outlets that jobs that protect the public are considered essential and would not be effected by the shutdown. What is scary and sadly true is that the Obama Administration is prepared to make it as painful on the general public in hopes that Republicans are blamed. The real reason, I believe, that most politicians concern themselves with the shutdown because they are afraid that it will reveal the number of Government employees and jobs that are really non-essential and that we could make it through without.
As I posted else where, one must be careful with definitions. For instance, the feds performing such duties as rebuilding tanks at Anniston Depot and working at military ammo plants weren't considered essential. However, they are necessary.
